@blogslut Yeah its the same when I catch the train home when Im in melbourne, 3 coverage fades in and out, yet when im at home I am still in a 3 broadband area, and Im right out past dandenong.

before telstra got its shit together and extended the exchange's dslam capability, I used to hook myphone and laptop up to the home network and download the guide info to my media center via ICS.

gotta luv hspda

I am seriously jealous at this point. I did not realize you have 3 and vodafone. I have to leave North America if I want a decent mobile operator. I suppose I'm lucky I do not have to deal with Rodgers and their 7mb/month "data plans."

John,

yea I am on a 3 pre-paid account but I notice if you get maybe 15-20 kms from the Sydney...about Epping on the way home...you lose the 3 covrage and go on roaming and then it's just annoying. If you live in the city then great, not so good otherwise.

I think I will see what kind of plans Vodaphone and Optus have and then maybe decide if I get an iPhone or not.

3 have the best data plans if you live in a capital city that is serviced by them. I pay $30 for 2GB of data. good for email, browsing and downloading my podcasts (inc TGGP).

AND I get that without being on a contract !!

3 also share the telstra towers so you always have a service. beware of data outside the '3 broadband area' however, they charge at $0.15 a megabyte !!

it gets costly (e.g. a $300 phone bill composing mostly of data).

bah. just get an E51 or N95 for free. I'm bummed. I've lost interest in the E71, HTC Diamond and 3G iPhone. btw - The WWDC08 keynote video should be up by now.

Yea I have an iTouch and am still undecided on getting or even managing to justify getting an iPhone.

It would also depend on rates and or plans that are available, we will just have to wait and see.

Before you buy an iPhone in Australia, check the frequency and data charges for your plan.

Personally, unless the new iPhone is better, I'd prefer the iPod Touch, the hardware is slicker.

BTW, Vodafone already has an iPhone page, but it just redirects at this moment: http://iphone.vodafone.com.au

I could only find press release links on Optus.

Doug - thanks for "LIVE commenting" the event for us :P

I agree though - I have no idea of the details yet - but there will be a sting in this - the price will be a lot more than people are speculating. Just wait and see - Australian pricing is yet to be disclosed. But take a look at similar phones and the plans that you have to be on to get them... Plus you can't tell me that Apple won't take advantage that all the hype will bring in interest of the product. It made the 6pm news here! If I was Apple I would charge top dollar. We shall see eh.

Holdddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd up Dougie!!!!
Check the fine print!!! Apple looks like they got a nice con here!! Hopefully it all un ravels before the release. Speculation that the out-right price could be as high as AU$950!!! Cheap? I think NOT! Only speculation though! Im not going near any contracts!! No thanks!!! I wish Apple would just release there pricing stuctures with the relevant Provider (Optus or Vodafone) ON release! Not just asking us for $100 deposits without knowing what we are purchasing!!
They are also talking about making the USA customers register there iphones from at&t IN store before they leave!! Bloody hell, what has Apple come to?!?!?!?!
If Steve's new "strategy" is as evil as it may appear (it's only early days though!) I hope it back fires!
Only time will tell!
And yes I will stop talking to myself thankyou!

The earlier comment from me was just a quicky, had to rush off!!
Im thinking the price will be around AU$450 for the 8GB, AU$550 for the 16GB. Main reason being is that is HAS to be more expensive then the iPod touch (8GB - AU$399 and 16GB - AU$499). Unless we see a drop in prices with the touch (I doubt it). I will only buy it if it will be on prepaid, and I think that may be an option as it will be selling on the Vodafone and Optus network. You can "Pre-Order" it from Optus currently,AU$100 deposit now, and if you don't end up buying the iPhone, AU$100 back. Sounds to good to be true.... Ill wait till the final price and the "package" details have been announced, before I make my move!

At a minimum of 1680$ [ USD ] for two years of service I'm not really sure it's worth the cost. That's over 1900$ after tax. As much as I want mobile data I'm going to have to go pre-paid for a while and see how much cheaper it really could be. If HSDPA and zero minutes was 30$ a month I'd be all over it and just pay for voip minutes.

Doug,

I wouldn't rely on current exchange rates for basis of a price. You can add n a whole lot more than that for the price here I am sure.
