Finally listened to the show, was indeed "relaxed" thanks to the god of alcohol.

The flickr vidoe interested me in that flickr is associated with good quality images, as you said, not videos. Perhaps this is not the path they should travel.

I just had to put something here so we could have 30 comments!

Oh, and I sent a couple links to the Global Geek Feedback Gmail address about portable apps...

So, there, I had a legitimate comment anyway.

@colin_w As far as I am aware they are using an ad model - so basically ads are shown on the pages. However that may include ads in the RSS feeds etc as well. Me I am not convinced that this is the best model as an ad blocker or something similar fixes that - and ppl just don't click ads (not the sensible ones at any rate).

But yeah I agree with you. But then as I said in the podcast it is is a great solution for people that don't want the hassle of setting it up.

Lefora free forums looks very interesting - almost too good to be true. As has been said before, what's the business model here? How do they make money?

What happens say after two years of using this service on your website and building up a successful forum with many users and lots of useful threads, that 'due to unforeseen server use and storage issues', Lefora decide to delete all old threads to free up space, or even ask for an annual fee to maintain the service. Their terms of use don't seem to rule this out:

'Lefora reserves the right at any time and from time to time to modify or discontinue, temporarily or permanently, this Site, the Software and/or the Services (or any part thereof) with or without notice at any time.'

I've seen server and software issues on forums before and the 'loss' of old threads. Really annoying as tech forums for example are often a really good resource. You remember reading an interesting thread but when you search you find some old threads have disappeared.

Lefora may be best for hosting a forum which the webmaster doesn't want to be a long-term searchable resource and doesn't mind losing old threads or pulling out altogether if asked to pay an annual fee at a later date.

On the other hand, paying a fee may be fine if it's a good reliable service.

@Herne: great catch on the spelling... we all have to keep Dave on the ball. ;)

@Eric: No OS is safe. Computers aren't safe. Unless you want to disconnect it from every possible threat and have it run nothing but a fibonacci number generator that you wrote all by yourself in assembler... there's a chance of a hole. The more people use an OS, the more quickly the holes get found.

General comment: That wordpress upgrade plugin looks really good. I'll have to try it out. Sure beats the Unix shell script I wrote lst year. :P

@Dave

I'll have a read. I really respect what you're doing here and I value your stand.

That said I am a religious fanatic and I believe BSD is vastly superior to anything else.

btw - I do not work at Sun or Apple nor would I claim Apple offers any sort of security.

Hi Dave & Kate

Thanks for mentioning Simplebucket.com on your podcast. I loved every moment of it. You guys brought up a lot of valid points.

@kate: yes, I'm listening.... :) Simplebucket does bring up some similarity of with "the other bucket", but I have to go with Dave on bucket is a pretty generic thing and my motivation behind the site's name wasn't trying to copy "the other bucket". The inspiration behind the name is actually because Simplebucket utilizes Amazon Web Services, S3, to host the photos and "bucket" is a terminology referring a "folder" for each account. The simple part is pretty obvious and so Simplebucket!

@Dave: I'm sorry that the site did not load properly for you when you were trying. Let me know if you are still having problems.

Thanks

@Eric: to be honest mate - on the other foot is the fact that the reports that symantec do on a regular basis are well respected. Their data is backed up by evidence - they don't just make it up. If I remember rightly they slammed MS last time. In addition to that as you have correctly pointed out - they have a brand that IS respected and valuable. It would not be in their interests to release bogus data. It would damage the brand and make it worthless. Also these reports are not the sort of light reading that the Mums and Dads of this world - the ones that would run out and buy symantec products - would read, 100+ pages! To balance it out as well, you are a bit bias, no?

We have to be balanced. If this data was complete crap, then I would know about it. Additionally, there would be every open source blog on the planet up in arms about it. I have not seen anything come out of Red Hat on the issue.. they would be the first to be screaming.

Sorry you loose faith, but the facts are facts. I'll admit when I am wrong every time. But in this case, I can't see it. But if you can demonstrate that the data is false then I'll be glad to be corrected. Heck we were wrong about the 100 dollar note!

Have a read of the document and let me know.

You kids believe that symantec FUD and even gave it air-time. I'm loosing my faith. Think about their business model. Would they have anything to gain if they claimed OpenBSD has the fastest security patches? Not really. They'd have a lot to gain if people migrated to the mediocre MS platforms. Dont be naive.
