Picnik Goes Full Featured for Free
Good news today that the most excellent online image editing tool picnik announced that all features are now included for free. Before today some features were locked for non subscribers.
We have talked about picnik a few times on the show. Most recently it partnered with flickr to offer integration with flickr and with it the ability to edit your images and replace that image with the newly edited version. I have used it a few times for minor editing when I have forgotten to do it before the upload and it works well.
Now you can do things like rounded corners, drop shadows and Polaroid frames as well as some “advanced” features without having to pay for it. I like the service for its simplicity and power. The integration with other online storage solutions and services like Facebook is a nice touch.
This announcement may be a reaction to another online editing tool called FotoFlexer announcing that their pro version was free a few weeks ago. Personally I prefer picnik, I think the interface is cleaner and easier to use. Both however offer a similar service with integration.
Picnik maintains ads on site for free accounts, the cash will now make them disappear. Me, I can put up with a few ads. Plus I did notice that when I tried to go full screen it popped up a prompt to subscribe. Not sure if this is a paid feature or not but at this time it would seem that is the case. No biggie in my opinion.
Let us know what you think about picnik in the comments, you can try it without registering. I am just waiting for this to be snapped up by Yahoo!, Google etal.
