The Global Geek Podcast #76 :: Linguistic Gymnastics

I don’t usually say what I think about a show. Mainly because I am scared that our listeners will think the opposite and I am totally wrong. But this week I am going to go out on a limb and say that I think this weeks show is awesome.

We have everything in there this week, Dave loses the plot, Cait is delusional, Keith comes out of his shell with a comedy act, Skype bombs and a listener voicemail!
We really did enjoy recording and producing this show, we hope that you get a kick out of it as well. That is all I am going to say, Just Listen!

Have not listened to the show yet but looked at Flickr Fight. Good to see Dogs win over Cats.

  2. Eric Says:

Speaking of the N95… this is funny. I just upgraded from the Nseries N80 to the Eseries E51, which I love but Opera Mobile 8.5 is not working. Anyway hopefully, Opera Mobile 9.5 is going to be released in conjunction with 3GSM next week.

  3. Matt Says:

The link to the mp3 for Podcast #76 didn’t work - I played with it and this is the link
    http://globalgeek.thepodcastnetwork.com/audio/tpn_theglobalgeekpodcast_20080203_076.mp3

  4. Global Geek Says:

@Matt Fixed, the download link now works: thanks for the pick-up. That link was the link for the flash player to display. I must have copied and pasted too much :P

Why not subscribe if you are listening regularly? If you need some help with this - just shout. We might need to cover a how to on the show.

  5. Matt Says:

I’ve got an RSS link in Google Reader which shows up when the podcast is posted. However, it only has a link to this site not the mp3 download.

  6. Global Geek Says:

@Matt you should give FeedDemon a shot - free and displays full posts :) and that means with a download link. Oh and yup you can read your feeds online as well. I’ll understand if you can’t let go of GReader though.

Let us know what you think of the show this week when your done listening!

  7. Matt Says:

I’m giving FeedDemon a shot now - too bad I couldn’t automatically load my feeds from Google Reader.

It would also be nice if it would integrate with a download manager.

  8. Herne Says:

Re Flickr Fight; cute, but not particularly interesting.

Re mobile phones; I don’t own one. Who would want to call me on a train anyway?

Re Nameexif; Interesting, but most “real” photographers will batch rename photos anyway. I’m not a “real” photographer, but I generally rename photos so I know what they are.

Re Twitter stuff; I still haven’t found a reason to keep following Twitter.

Re Second Life; Haven’t been there in a couple weeks either.

Re MacBook Air; As I said before, pretty toy but not particularly useful even as a “second laptop.” Second laptop? I’m still using an iBook from 2000 as my “first laptop.” I wish I could afford a new desktop, nevermind a second laptop!

Re new desktop; Anyone want to make some suggestions as to what I should get? ;)

What else did I want to mention? Oh yeah… I’d still like to hear about the hosting solutions. I imagine you guys are still gearing up to do a show on it. If you’re looking for another show idea, how about “Why Blog?” Because I’m still trying to figure out why I should blog.

  9. Eric Says:

@Herne, how about a shiny new refurb macbook? It’s not a desktop but it’s cheap enough.

Actually, the Phenom 9500 seems to be about 200 USD and Frys has given away ECS motherboards with them recently.

  10. Raf Says:

Do the accents and voices from time to time!!! It was so funny!! :D

    Raf

  11. Herne Says:

@Eric: I’m in Canada, we don’t have Fry’s unfortunately. I looked at a 24″ iMac for around $2000 CDN or a Intel dual Duo-core for about $1600… I’m still not sure which I want. I use both Mac and PC pretty much interchangeably.

  12. Dave Gray Says:

@Matt you can actually import all your feeds from Google Reader. You first need to “export” your OLML file from Google Reader. Save the file. Now open FeedDemon and click “File” –> “Import Feeds” Select “Import and OPML File” select the file that you saved. Click Next.

    DONE!

All your feeds from Google Reader are now in FeedDemon and being updated.

FeedDemon does have a download manager associated with any podcasts that you download from FeedDemon. It separates all your podcasts into a folder for each one. You can create playlists for iPod and WMP also.

  13. Dave Gray Says:

Oh and Matt if you need some info on this function in GReader check out the Google Reader FAQ:

    http://www.google.com/help/reader/faq.html#export

    Cheers

  14. George Says:

Interesting podcast as always, i can say that now that i have actually listened to it.

We shall miss you Maclabrat, stuck under the spy satellite. As i was driving along, i somehow got a beaver stuck in my head as what a maclabrat would look like. I digress.

The stories of the toads had me laughing. Some further comments, if your dog licks one and gets lock jaw, stick a hose in their mouth and flush the mouth out, used to fix our dogs. Any yes, I have been known to swerve for them on the roads, each car is different so some practice is requried. And the pop is commensurate to the size of the toad. Long story but i drove over a “massive” one in the creek with a bobcat at the farm thus validating the theory.

The crows and the toads is also interesting, it is actually a learned behaviour. One crow started doing it, and the rest learn by example. Really good look at adaption except when you find a gutted upside down toad on the door of your office in the mornings.

Haven’t got any productive to add except, i did note that your tweeter was now private dave, and that the analogy of the blowfly into the wall with the jetpacks was excellent.

  15. Mac Lab Rat Says:

@Herne: I said that the MacBook air makes a decent “second computer”, not specifically a “second laptop”. The reason I say that is simply because its far more useful used in conjunction with a main machine, probably a souped up desktop machine with lots of storage for all of your media files. I meant this more along the lines that the Air is basically useless as a primary machine.

Don’t get me wrong, I still think that it is an overpriced laptop, and morenof a showpiece than a functional computer.

  16. Mac Lab Rat Says:

    oh yes… @raf: the accents may re-appear someday…

  17. knightwise Says:

Do you have ANY idea ho much time and effort has gone into deflecting that spy sat towards Canada ? I had to persuade dr Evil to lend me his space shuttle, fly up to the sat, have Norbert (of all people) handle the robot arm, go OUT INTO SPACE to manually adjust the sat, have NORBERT pinch me in the butt with the robotic arm (his idea of a joke) and re-allign the sat to hit the Maclabrat. And all of that as revenge for the fact that HE leaked the Mega Mindy pictures to those phone-tapping jarheads at the GGP. Vengeance is not sweet , it pretty hard work , thats what it is. (PS I tried to redirect Hubble to shoot some pictures of the Mac Labrat in womans clothes , de does so every sunday afternoon, but could not find the time to do it. )

  18. knightwise Says:

And by the way, The Mac Labrat is actualy a cross-dressing Alien ! His universal translator is on the fringe, thats why he swings back and forth between accents all the time.

  19. knightwise Says:

I found the time to re-allign Hubble to shoot some pictures but I can’t transfer them to my USB stick. I looked at the fact why it was so terribly slow and found out Hublle is running on VISTA ! So thats why the bloody thing keeps having kittens all the time.

And I support FlickrFight ! I love the buggers. Just because of the fact Knightwise vs The Rooster is just in favour of ME ! ME ! Eat that Canada ! … erm .. I think i’m loosing it.

  20. Mac Lab Rat Says:

@knightwise: I think your brain is overheating inside that little pink mask. You should take it off once in a while and let your head breathe.

    Now where’d I put that translator matrix….

  21. Matt Says:

Regarding moving RSS feeds from Google Reader to FeedDemon - I only had about a dozen to move, so cut and paste in about 5 mins I was done.

Nice show this week - I have only stumbled on this podcast this year. Nice mix of information and stories and not taking things too seriously.

  22. Doug Says:

    Good show guys.
@Keith, the Touches are great and as you said I mainly use it for web browsing to (well did!)
I bought it on release in Australia and I find 16GB is plenty for me and im coming from a shuffle, hehe. Anyway just had mine replaced (had the “white screen of death”) and have managed to get the new apps free has them as the new one, score!
@all Anyway you also mentioned the Asus eeePC. I just purchased one and am typing on it now. The linux OS included is pretty good but planning on installing XP on an external HDD (The 4GB flash memory/storage isn’t enough really) So ill be able to use Linux or XP (installing XP on an external hdd and booting it off a usb device requires hacking, but there is a guide on the net).
As for yahoo, i don’t either know anyone that uses it. Only thing I like about yahoo (as you said) is yahoo answers.
Also has “open office” ever been on this show? The eeePC comes with it, and its bloody great! Ive just installed it on my main PC, screw “Office”
Anyway as I said good show.

  23. Eric Says:

@Herne, I’m actually thinking about the 24″ imac as well. I’ll wait for the price on the 2.4GHz refurbs to come down though.

I’d love to get my hands on an eee but for 400$ I can get a dual core notebook at Frys and install FreeBSD, which I prefer to linux.

Anyone using the N800 or N810?

btw - When is Dave switching to the Macbook?

  24. Dave Gray Says:

@Eric still not sure when I will take the Mac plunge. Which sort of went on hold after I got the second monitor and the new video card. Maybe one day I might get a laptop or something. But a desktop machine at this stage is not on the radar.

@Doug yah I agree - screw office. I use anything but when I can. I think that open office does an excellent job. In fact you’ll laugh to know that the text editor of choice for me is NotePad :P I use it a lot and all my emails are text only and as many would know - NotePad is great for coding html etc.

@Matt I would be interested to know how you found the show? Glad that you like it, we put a lot of work into it, nice to get the feedback.

Thanks for all the great comments guys - keep em coming!

@Knightwise… what now it is phone tapping??? You just can’t accept the fact that we got you fair and square… you know you had it coming :P

  25. Herne Says:

@Mac Lab Rat: I notice that they’re taking pre-orders for the new 32GB iPod Touch at FutureShop. List price is $500. It’s almost worth buying…if it was $200 less.

@Dave Gray: I’m thinking you guys need to do a show with instructions on how to build your own computer… With all the prices I’m seeing, I’m thinking I could probably just cobble something together myself for less! With my luck, though, I’d muck up the CPU when I jammed it into the motherboard…

@Cait: You are suspiciously absent! :)

  26. Global Geek Says:

@Hern I agree wholeheartedly - My current computer to buy prebuilt - based on specs would have been in the vicinity of 2,000 to 2,500 (when I built it). I built it for about 1,100 bucks aussie. Now the CPU thing… I don’t even do that bit - I did everything but. Just find some nice geek someplace that will do it for you. Failing that ask the guys in the computer shop to mount the CPU - it is scary stuff and freaks me out. The rest of the job is not that hard, especially now that things like USB wires are one plug that only goes on one way.

So yup you are right, you can whack something together easily. Take a listen to the rebuild special that we did. Plus we might cover the components that you need in an up and coming show.

  27. Mac Lab Rat Says:

@Herne: I completely agree about the 32GB touch. $100 is too much to pay for nothing more than the extra storage. (written from the touch on the free wifi at the curling rink :P)

@Eric: In addition to the GGP rebuild special, there’s also a great howto guide on wikihow.  Admittedly it’s for a Home-Theatre PC, but the steps are pretty much the same for any machine, just the component selection that varies. I think GeekBrief.tv did a similar buildout last year as a video-podcast series.

  28. Global Geek Says:

    @Herne
I’m here and totally satisfied with my XPS 1710, don’t need a new ‘puter, Mac or PC.

    @Herne & @Mac Lab Rat
iPod iterations aren’t for people who have the previous model, they’re for the people who didn’t buy the last one.

    Cait

  29. Herne Says:

@Cait: I looked at the Dell XPS420 with Intel® Core™2 Q6600 Quad-Core (8MB L2 cache,2.4GHz,1066FSB)–I customized it out to $1600. But I keep wondering if I can’t do better just building one myself. Also, Dell wouldn’t let my opt out of Windoze Vista which kinda sucks.

  30. Mac Lab Rat Says:

@Cait: Completely agree. The only reason I would ever consider an upgrade is if I could find a way to do it as an exchange. ;)

@Herne: Why opt-out of Vista? I can understand not wanting to upgrade an existing machine from XP –> Vista, but in my experience the problems with Vista are over-blown…

  31. knightwise Says:

@maclabrat : Counting down to impact over here.
@Dave : Phone tapping ! Yes that is exactly what it was. i even thought putting Nyana through because I was driving. That would have given you an interesting soundbyte !
@cait : Her vista porbably wont boot , thats why she’s not online
@everyone : I ordered an asus EEEpc too (had to smuggle it in from the US) so i’ll give you my thoughts when I get it

Oh yeah ! We sold the house ! (in 3 days Flat)

  32. Doug Says:

@KW…3 days, lucky to get it sold in 3 months in Australia!
What model eee did you get? I managed to install and boot XP off an 120gb external harddrive(edited some of the I386 files, due to the defualt only lets you boot of IDE). Works like a charm. Had it installed on the internal storage but being only the 4GB version (only one available in Australia) it was pretty useless even after nLiting it. So now I can have Xandros or Windows XP (Dual boot I suppose?).
I liked the look of ubuntu for it, that was my next option if XP didn’t work. The eee version is called the Xubuntu (so im told).
Also I would like to say I installed SL on it!!Was talking to the other Dave (SL: Dave Koi). Very,Very laggy, BUT nothing 2GB ram upgrade won’t fix:D
    Anyway have fun with it!

  33. Terry Says:

Building a PC isn’t that hard, I’m with Dave, I don’t like messing around with CPUs that much. My last PC I custom built - the CPU was one of those vertical slot ins. They probably don’t make them anymore.

I once dropped soldier onto a motherboard once. I wasn’t the most popular person in the workshop that day…
