What is Data Portability?
On the last show we talked very briefly about the fact that Google and others had joined the data portability work group. All this data portability stuff is pretty new and some people might not know what the heck it is all about.
Today I got hold of a video that explains, simply what it is.
DataPortability - Connect, Control, Share, Remix from Smashcut Media on Vimeo.
One of the founders and driving forces behind the concept and ideas that surround data portability is Chris Saad. That name might ring a bell for those that use or have tried Particles from Faraday Media. Tim and I had a great debate about Particles on Show Number 53.
Hoping that clears up some confusion about just what is data portability and the vision. If you want to know more there is a huge range of resources on their site. You can even follow the progress on twitter. There is also the TPN version of Particls, you can check out for free.

The problem I see with data portability is, my data is no longer private. They SAY it’s private, they SAY it’s encrypted, but the data is no longer in my possession, it’s “out there” floating around in the Net. My main problem with putting things “in the cloud” (as Cameron Reilly always says) is that my data has left my control.
