First Look at WordPress 2.5
A bit of old news with some new. The WordPress guys have decided to brush of version 2.4 of WordPress. Jeffro covered that in his “podcast” (the “podcast” is because he is using Talkshoe… come on Jeff!) so get his take on it there. But today I came across what we might expect from the next iteration of WordPress.
Turns out that one of the areas that this release will focus on is something that your readers don’t see, the back-end (no not yours); the WordPress back-end. Something that the readers don’t see but as a blogger you spend some time staring at and wondering what next. So a complete make-over, really for the user. Tops
The cool thing is that there is a demo of this very early version that you can take a look at. You can’t “do” anything with the demo; but you can have a tab through the screens and have a look. I noticed that some of the buttons are devoid of icons and the page seems to have more options that you have to scroll to. Personally I don’t like the idea of scrolling for the options that are currently on the right and easy to use.
That said this is a very early look-see and we will have to await March to see what is really in store. Cool for a look. Click the screenshot.
Be sure to check out Jeff’s “podcast” which is all things WordPress!

LMAO, I will never hear the end of it. First, the Zune. Now, Talkshoe. I’m making so many wrong decisions in life
Thanks Dave for the mentions and the podcast link. I have a lot of stuff to discuss on tomorrows episode so it should be another decent show.
Now, about that backend redesign. I’ve found out the company that was hired for the job. They are called, http://www.happycog.com/ and apparently this company has some top notch designers that are all about accessibility and W3C standards. It will be interesting to see what they come up with as far as the new design goes.
So many people on the post concerning the redesign in it’s current form were negative. Matt Mullenweg had to step in and remind these people that the product is not even anywhere near done yet, so it would be best to reserve judgment.
Also, some people have reported that the images for the 2.4 (now 2.5) backend were leaked which is not true. Anyone can see the progress being made on the design as well as the core code by setting up an SVN installation of WordPress. For those that don’t know, the SVN install is the absolute bleeding edge version of WordPress.

[[ OK... this is take 2 of this comment. Wordpress ate the first try. ]]
In looking at the first (admittedly very early draft) of the Wordpress 2.5 admin screen, one thing jumps out at me: What exactly did they change???
This appears to be little more than a new skin. Even things like my favourite admin skin SpotMilk have some nice clean functionality enhancements.
I’m glat to hear that the HappyCog folks are involved. It’ll be nice to see what a design firm can do for the back end.
