Hey guys, just wanted you to know I put some GGP luv on my deviantART webpage. I already have Dave on my watchlist, but he hasn’t posted anything to dA in quite a while!

  2. Brie Sansotta Says:

What happened to the My Chingo podcast?? - it ends at just about 48 minutes!! I didn’t get to hear the whole podcast. I like to use that method of hearing your podcast, because I can see the links as I’m listening (and playing mindless games).

  3. Eric Says:

anandtech and extremetech have touched on the phenom CPUs behind “spider” and it’s not good. btw - DW’s Living Planet podcast/show/whatever had Howard on recently. I think it’s good you touch on politics and culture. btw2 - people are getting the 8gb ipod touch for about 250$ via paypal’s 20% cash back program today. btw3 - i got a shwag bag from S60 today! woohoo! btw4 - you never talk about TPN analytics btw5 - someone added me via skype and never heard from him again. btw6 - netvibes mobile is a bit better lately

  4. Dave Gray Says:

Brie: What is the “My Chingo Podcast”?? I have no idea what you are talking about. If you refer to the flash player, the one on the blog post that has a play button… It plays the whole thing, it does not stop at 48 minutes (I am playing it now and it is at 1 hour and 25 minutes!). So I am completely lost and have no idea what you are referring to.

The MyChingo service refers to a service that allows people to click the link and then leave us a voicemail on the MyChingo service.

So you are going to have to fill me in a bit more. But I can assure you that the whole podcast is on the server and streams fine from the website.

  5. brie Says:

Sorry, Dave, it IS, indeed, the flash player - I was doing several things at once when I sent that comment. Now, when I look at the time (The Global Geek Podcast #70 (MP3 - 31.26 MB - 1:30:59), it gives the correct time. Yesterday, it said 47.48 - or something close to that. I knew it was getting close when you guys were discussing apps, and I looked at the slider - it was almost at the end. So, I looked at the time - it said, as I said, above, 47.something. So, I did not get to hear the end of the podcast and Knightwise’ rant. But, looks like I can get it today. First time that ever happened - I always use the flash player as it is easier for me. Sorry about the confusion. Brie

  6. Dave Gray Says:

OK all good - just making sure that all is good and I am not going mad :P

  7. knightwise Says:

The fact that you ARE going mad is totally beyond any discussion whatsoever.

  8. Herne Says:

Just a comment that’s actually show related–I think that these “social networking” sites are taking and storing far too much personal information about people in the name of “helping”. As far as I’m concerned, it’s all about targeted marketing and making a buck off the backs of the consumer. I refuse to put anything beyond very basic information (some of it is even true) into these sorts of websites and I absolutely HATE having my activities or surfing habits tracked in the name of advertising. I block most of the ads, but I still get adverts for “finding singles” and such on Facebook because I made the mistake of listing myself as single in my profile. Nothing more cheery in the morning than great huge pink flashing adverts that say “Find your match now!!!” every time you refresh a page.

  9. Jeffro2pt0 Says:

First off, another great show guys. Packed with a ton of information. Secondly, it may not seem like it, but I’ll miss Tim. The more I listen to him, the funnier he becomes. And wow, what a rant my KW. I couldn’t stop wincing in pain as he threw caution into the wind and opened the floodgates. I thought to myself, wow this guy has some balls. At any rate, that was probably one of the harshest rants I have ever heard. At one point, I felt the same way and KW did about Second Life but after giving it a try for myself and realizing the benefits and use of the second virtual world, I think it has it’s purpose in some way shape or form.

    Also, in reply to Herne;

Over the past few weeks, I have heard so many people complain about Facebook and what they are doing with the data you have given them. I’ve given it some thought and have come to the conclusion that social-networks are nothing more than marketing data harvesters. Asides from having a ton of eyeballs to market to advertisers, most of the user’s on these social-networks provide accurate user data. The reason I believe this to be true is that, you want at least most of your profile to be accurate so your friends know who you are on that network. This accurate data makes for good demographics that the social network owner doesn’t have to work so hard to retrieve.

In the end, you’re not an end user. Your a pawn within a giant game called online advertising. If you don’t like it, don’t use the damn service. Here is a better idea, buy a webhosting account, download WordPress, and create your own social network that you control, around your blog.

  10. Wade Says:

Another great show. Tim we will miss you and you insane ability to drop the f bomb at the funniest moments.

Show realted comment about PayPal’s one time use credit card numbers. American Express was doing this in 2000 with a product called Private Payments. Basically you logged onto Amex’s site and generated a card number every time you wanted to use the service. They have since tuned this application off in 2005. The main driver behind this I am sure it that it is easier for them to gaurantee that they will cover any fraudulent spend on your card (which they do with the blue card in the US) than to run an application to track all those random card numbers.

  11. George Says:

    Good show guys.

A few brief comments as I need to give a presentation im yet to write.

    1. Nice use of dildo in the show Tim!
    2. Thanks for your efforts in hosting.
    3. Good rant KW!
    4. Im still not into social networking perse and dont think I ever will be, but hey lots of the younger crowd here at work (geez i must be old) all have facebook or myspace.

  12. Dave Gray Says:

Thanks for all the comments guys, I have read and noted all :)

Interesting comments about the social networks. While I have a profile on Facebook, I shared as much as I was willing for them to know. The other thing I don’t do is add a crap load of apps. They just crowd the facts imho. Plus I said what I thought of Beacon, and there will be more news on that in this weeks show.

Thanks for the insight into the PayPal thing Wade - I did not know it had been done before.

Oh and for those reading and tracking the comments - I have a huge surprise this week with a new host - it will not be what you are expecting. And THAT is all I am going to say :)

  13. Dave Gray Says:

Oh and Jeff sorry missed your comment, yes KW is MAD. Plus interesting that you too have had a rethink on SL. No chance of KW doing that…

  14. Herne Says:

@Jeffro2pt0: Oh for sure these “social networking” sites are data harvesters. And the most amusing thing is that people willingly give these sites private and accurate data because they just don’t know any better. These are the same types of people that have their identities stolen and then claim, “Uh, I didn’t know posting my driver’s license on the Internet was bad.” I never put private data on the ‘Net and I’m certainly not going to make it easy for some marketer to target me with spam.

@Dave: Yeah, Facebook has far too many apps, and the people who keep adding them to their profiles obviously are missing the little checkbox that says “Allow this application access to your private data?” Uh, no, I don’t want MORE marketers having access to my data, thanks.

In regards to Second Life… I’ve been trying it out, but I’ve still to find a real purpose for it other than letting Linden Labs make a crap-load of money, or “dancing” for Linden bucks. Everything seems to cost Linden bucks, and I personally can’t see giving LL $10 a month for what they’re offering. I’ve been asking Cam to do a show about what SL is and how it’s useful, maybe you should get together with him on that?

  15. Dave Gray Says:

@Hern just remember that social networks can’t take your data outside of the terms of service that you agree to. However as you say - that can be over ridden by agreeing to allow a 3rd party app to do what it likes. And just FYI your email address for OUR blog is not stored for data trawling, it is just another level of protection against spammers. So fear not the geek :)

Not everything costs $L in SL - you just have to know where to look. But then to actually acquire some L$ is as cheap as so 10 lindens is about 5 cents or something stupid. If you like I’ll throw you 1000 and see if the experience changes. I bet it doesn’t that much. As we said in the show - SL is what you make of it. I agree we have to find a better way of finding events that are worth attending - I think that is actually hard.

The other thing that we should do is have a meet - up for the GGP. We are working on a place that we can meet as well :) That is where it is at for me - interacting with people. And unless you know people in SL the experience can be ordinary. But I have found that ppl are actually really friendly and want to do that as well.

In addition to all that we are going to start including some SL content into the podcast - places events and news so that we can all learn what the go is together.

Again I reiterate though - SL is what you want to make of it. If you sit at home and do nothing - don’t ask yourself why you have no friends. SL is exactly the same on so many levels. You want somewhere to call home? Buy it, build it, or call on a mate for a favor. All these aspects inho make for a very interesting mix of places events and circumstances that you might find yourself in SL.

Maybe I need to take you skydiving in SL??

  16. Dave Gray Says:

Oh and for those GGP’ers that are having a second look at SL my user name is Rooster Rubble so feel free to search for me and add me as a friend. Be sure to mention that your a listener of the show - Otherwise I might think you are a stalker and not add you ;)

  17. Herne Says:

@Dave: My email on your blog is fake anyway! :)

I’d like to learn more about SL, but unfortunately Aussies like you and Cam are on a way different time zone from us up here in Canada. I’m not sure how far you’re off from EST, but I never seem to catch anyone at TPN HQ in SL.

I think I’ve already added you in SL, I’m using Herne there as well.

  18. Dave Gray Says:

I know your email is fake… geeze

Yeah in Canada you are about as far removed from our timezone as you can get - bummer. But it also explains why Keith gets up at 4 am when he does the show!

We shall work on a Northern Hemisphere SL group then :)

  19. Herne Says:

    Yeah, sometimes I’m Captain Oblivious.

I manage a group of people in India from Canada and sometimes I think I forget where I am…

  20. Herne Says:

Facebook members have forced the social networking site to change the way a controversial ad system worked.

More than 50,000 Facebook users signed a petition calling on the company to alter or abandon its Beacon advertising technology.

  22. Goran Says:

    Hey guys, good show again.
Quick question about Tim’s PIM setup. You briefly mentioned something about syncing between Google Calendar and mobile devices (?). I am just trying to get this working, but haven’t found a good solution yet.
    Any ideas?

Ideally syncing multiple GCalendars to Outlook and a couple of mobile phones…

    Cheers,
    -G

  23. Tim Says:

My PIM setup is using a program called:

    Essential PIM

It’s great because it will sync between Google Cal (importing) and mobile devices (exporting), its a manual sync, but you usually know when you’ve changed your calendar.

It’s only for Windows users but its a great product.

And yes you can sync multiple calendars to Outlook with it.

  24. knightwise Says:

If you need some info about syncing google calendar to you r windows mobile device : I use a free app called oggsync ! And it rules (and is free).

  25. Ian Warren Says:

    Hi guys,

I just discovered your podcast a couple of days ago while at work randomly clicking around online during my lunchbreak (actually who am I kidding I was blatantly slacking off during work hours). I’ve just got through listening to this week’s show and I have to say I’m already hooked. I’ve not listened to any podcast before but the GGP perfectly combines my love of technology and the web with my short attention span and hatred of reading…. what’s more I’m from the UK so it’s nice to hear words like ‘arse’ and ‘bloody’ which I can relate to way more than the usual US stuff :)

Good work and thanks for providing such a useful service for free!

  26. knightwise Says:

I swear both UK and US friendly :)
