The Global Geek Podcast #69 :: Special Edition :: Second Life
This week we have a very special show and quite different for the GGP. There are a few firsts for The Podcast Network as well.
The show this week was recorded entirely in Second Life, thanks to Mike Seyfang. This is the first TPN Podcast recorded in Second life and Mike did a great job.
The show was also a joint show with the Extraordinary Everyday Lives Show. We talk to Dave Wallace (AKA Dave Koi) about Second Life and why he needed a Second Life. I talk about my first steps in Second Life and some tips and trick for noobs.
We also had an “in world” audience! I would like to extend my thanks to those that came to the Second Life recording session.
I don’t care what you think about Second Life, I would urge you put aside your ideas about what you think and listen to this weeks show and if nothing else, be inspired.
I sincerely hope that you are both challenged and inspired by Dave’s story and his life which is not so ordinary. I know that I am. I thoroughly enjoyed the show and thank the guys from The Extraordinary Everyday Lives Show for helping make it happen.

Haven’t gotten into Second Life yet, but I just moved house and I’ve now got myself high speed Internet, so it won’t be long before I lose my SL virginity. It looks interesting, but I can’t imagine spending $100’s of dollars on it.

Great show! I’m listening to the last few minutes now. I’ll be going through the blogs, looking at flickr and subscribing to Dave’s show after dinner.

Mike your url is fixed - although I am not sure what was wrong with it
Thanks Eric and Hern. @Hern I am not sure that most users spend anywhere near that. I would think that a few US dollars will get you started and in fact - you really don’t need to spend any, there is heaps of free stuff in SL
Glad you guys enjoyed the show, it was a blast to record produce and share.

[...] Skydiving in Second Life November 17, 2007 — The Rooster Listeners of the podcast would know that I have been delving into Second Life recently. The GGP number 69 Special edition just came out also, recorded entirely in Second Life. I am really enjoying Second Life, the chatting and the interaction has been great. But this week I went looking for some excitement… I found it. [...]

Dave
Interesting podcast. Didn’t think I would listen to it in its entirety but did anyway. Looking forward to KWs rant.
I must say, although im not a convert to SL i can see why people would become hooked in it.
And yes the arguement re sitting in front of the TV vs SL is valid. Unless you ask my wife then it is not. She would rather me sit in front of TV than sit in front of a computer. I digress.
I guess my position stems from the fact that my real life is busy and when I wish to enter a SL, i tend to play computer games or which are a fair way away from reality. Well at least running round shooting in a FPS is or sitting watching a RTS.
Actually, I probably wont ever go to SL as im too tight to pay for some Lindens.
However, each to their own.
Cheers
George

I joined SL in 2005 after Kelly Goto gave it a plug at Web Essentials (WE05), Sydney. I hated it. I was getting latency of about 9 SECONDS and couldn’t get off orientation island.
It was only earlier this year when I hooked up with the Perth and TPN crew in SL (plus since then upgraded from 256 to 1500 ADSL) that they helped me get off orientation island and showed me around the place and how to use it properly. Otherwise I would never have used it again.
I didn’t publicly express my disappointment in SL at the time like the people you mentioned who are in there for only 10 minutes then think they’ve experienced it enough to be able to give a qualified opinion of SL … but it does certainly need work in the orientation aspect. Perhaps if orientation island wasn’t SL at all, or a hybrid of web-based and SL-based training.
Good show - awesome idea doing a cross-show in-SL podcast!

before I throw myself in the dogghouse for ranting on second life I wanna congratulate you Dave on proving that you are an excellent host. Really high-quality show moderation there. Hats of ..

After getting my ZUNE! back into operational order, I have this show in the queue. Can’t wait to give it a listen.

Don”t squirt the show around once you’ve gotten it working.

@Knightwise thanks for the thanks. We worked hard to overcome some problematic issues to make this happen. I am actually very, very satisfied with the show and I am proud of the results.
Thanks to everyone for listening. Even George who did not think he would!
KW your rant will definitely be in this weeks show, oh and there will be a surprise as well…

Listened to the show last night and I have to also give you Kudos for being an excellent host on the show. It was a bit of an eye opener and in some aspects, it made me wonder if I really did give it a bad rap. Sort of funny listening to two Dave’s in one show.

I have to say, even I’m giving SL a second look after the podcast. The first time I played I couldn’t get off the tutorial island, and gave up after an hour or so.
This time I’ve had people I know who are regulars in SL give me a bit of a tutorial and get me started…
November 24th, 2007 at 1:16 am
I loved this podcast. Knightwise should give it up and love SL (since, as was alluded to in the podcast, SL is all about SEX - even though Dave disagrees).
I would like to find someone to help me get started on it. Like a tutor…
November 24th, 2007 at 1:26 am
@Brie I agree with you. Stay tuned this week for KW’s rant.
I can arrange someone to get you started in SL. I amnew too and so probably not the best person
But I am getting to know some people and they are all nice and I can hook you up. Shoot me an email to the feedback address when you are ready
November 24th, 2007 at 12:55 pm
LOL well given what Cam was screening on the virtual TV in the new TPN HQ … I think it *is* all about sex
But that was only because someone lost the remote …
November 24th, 2007 at 1:19 pm
Ha yeah right… lost the remote… that’s a good one
