BlueDot Now Known As Faves

Here is some news you can use. The social bookmarking site Blue Dot, has changed it’s name to Faves. In a recent email, BlueDot put together a FAQ which contains a number of questions and answers related to the name change. They are as follows:

Why did you change your name?

Many users are confused by a .us domain name – so we decided it was time we changed to a more mainstream .com domain.

Do I have to create a new account?

No. You can use the same user name (or email address) and password that you used on BlueDot.us, to sign in to Faves.com.

Will I lose any of my data or settings?

We have preserved all your bookmarks (now called “Faves”) on our new web site. You also still have all the same friend relationships, messages, etc. Everything is preserved.

Will my toolbar buttons still work?

Yes. There is nothing you need to do to update your browser toolbar buttons – they will work fine with Faves.com. But, if you want to update to the latest version (with icons that match our new site logo), just visit our toolbar installation page to get the latest version.

[Ed: This is not a "toolbar" as such - rather buttons for your toolbar in Firefox, use the "customize" feature and move them where you want to]

Asides from the name change, BlueDot (I mean Faves) has released a major upgrade of it’s service that includes the following new features:

Topic Subscriptions: In addition to seeing bookmarks from your friends, you can now subscribe to topics on Faves.com to see all the newest content about the topics you care about.

Personalized Homepage: This new page shows you all the most popular Faves from your subscriptions. We also keep track of any Faves you’ve seen before, so you see only fresh Faves when you click the “unread” button.

Voting: In addition to commenting on bookmarks, you can now vote them up or down. By clicking the up arrow, you’ll help Faves.com identify the best bookmarks for each topic (you can always find Faves you’ve voted on by visiting your personal Faves page and clicking the Votes tab – so it’s a good way to remember the stuff you like).

It looks like everything will remain the same in terms of usernames and the like so continue to tag your best finds through Faves.com with the tag TGGP. It may end up being mentioned on the show.

  1. The Puget News: Bye bye Blue Dot. Hello Faves! Says:

[...] The Global Geek Podcast: “Here is some news you can use. The social bookmarking site Blue Dot, has changed it’s name to Faves.” [...]

  2. Jeffro2pt0 Says:

so Dave, what are your thoughts regarding the changes that took place? do you like the changes or feel that Faves is on the right track?

  3. Dave Gray Says:

@Jeff the short answer is that I am undecided. First up I don’t like the name. They obviously could not get hold of bluedot.com which btw is a cruise, marine and travel and event company (would not load for me).

The topics and stuff is an extension of their topic pages or categories.

I think the voting thing is a bit of a wank, plus I don’t think that is the way that people used BlueDot. No one is going to do much voting, especially if you use the FF extension.

I liked the fact that they did not trash everyone’s data.

Other than that meh. I am yet to see what I think in detail, but it seems ok for now. Oh, and I am glad it was not a toolbar :) That would have lost some creed with me and I would have been back to delicious.
