ROFL wow, Way to get Tim fired up Dave. When I was giving Second Life a try, I could of sworn I saw an avatar that looked like Tim having a meeting with Michal Arrington and Calacanis.

jk

I'll have to write up my experience in Second Life and post it on the blog. I think you'll have a good laugh.

To continue the diatribe that was not completed above:

Do you really think that the people you talked to (whom you’ve actually never met) will take the time out when they are in their 70’s to reminisce about the good ol’ days they had when Joey4432 and *EMO;

Ok people, I got off Orientation Island, I checked out the sites, and talked to a heap of people...

And you know what I found?, while there is some things that are kinda cool (a few) its mostly just a 3D representation of the internet, with some avatars and flying.

Lets look at it from a social perspective, great, so I get to look at an avatar, which in this world represents me, in all my inner altruistic vision of who I am (just look at Cam Reilly's avatar) walk around virtual enclosures full of people who also don't have anything better to do than to walk around looking at stuff and interacting with others who also are walking around looking at stuff and interacting with others.

Ok so you can poke a stick at the thing and say "Oooh, but its so good to meet other people". This is where I slap my forehead and tell you to turn off your PC and go to a club, drop $40 bucks on the bar and party till the sun comes up.

You are guaranteed to meet people with 900% more charisma than a cardboard box (which by the way is what most people in Second Life pretty much are).

I'll give you the credit that there are plenty of cool, hip, UNEMPLOYED, 30 somethings with a little web 2.0 and a hell of a lot of college education that are getting around on it, musing at the way the economy is working or how [insert philosopher here]'s work is being played out in a virtual landscape.

But shit, look at it like this, imagine the potential that people have if they could put their time and effort into productive things, OH WAIT, you don't need to imagine the potential, its right here in 3D because Second Life is what it is, A WASTE OF TIME.

It truly IS the potential of thousands of people and thousands of hours of sitting at a desk, emulating modern society with a few extra perks like flying around, or becoming a minor Second Life celebrity.

But wait, can you hear that?

Its the screams of the people who think that it is a way for them to express themselves.

What, you don't think that when you exit Second Life for good there won't be another person that will take your place?

Do you really think that the people you talked to (whom you've actually never met) will take the time out when they are in their 70's to reminisce about the good ol' days they had when Joey4432 and *EMO;

@Cait that is exactly what I am getting at.. thank you.

It really is a blast.

You know those cool meet-ups, conferences and events that you can't get to for whatever reason? Well SL makes attending these things possible. In addition to this is the fact that the people you can interact with are right there in SL almost daily. That's what makes these spontaneous meet up possible.

Amazing possibilities and truly very very exciting. Thanks for dropping by Cait and giving me something else to rant about... :)

If you like Twitter, you should try Second Life. Twitter + Second Life = Spontaneous Web Meetspace

If you tried it once and never got off Orientation Island, Twitter for a guide and then jump on in.

@Tim Don't knock it until you have tried it - really tried it - getting an account then loggin in, taking all your clothes off and flying around... Does not qualify.

In all seriousness though, I DO think that it could be a great way to connect with listeners. People actually turn up to things and there is that participation that might not otherwise be there.

OH MY GOD...

And it was written, that:

I SHALL HAVE NO PART IN THIS 2nd LIFE TRAVESTY.

...and on the 3rd day, he did shun the world of 2nd Life and continued actually doing things that are productive rather than wasting time...

Certainly it will be a waste of time so to speak. But could you be doing something else with the time is the question. I waste time by procrastinating as you have seen!

Thought there might be a few comments like that :) Can't wait to hear what Knightwise says.

But then I'll call him on it - because I don't think that it is the great waste of time that he maintains it is.
