The Global Geek Podcast #65 :: Long Live XP!
Welcome to the 65th installment of the geek. In tech news this week we find that Microsoft took the hint that Vista is no XP killer, Flicker is for sale and a secret Google plan to lay cable.
We ditched the applications segment this week, the jar was empty in this department so we filled it with a hardware special: Networked Storage.
Sites and services this week is jam packed with goodness including a Google maps mash-up for panoramas, audio visual blogging and storage that lasts forever, at a price.
All that and more on the geek this week; plus your feedback and Keith fires off the GGP Mac Lab Rat Update.

Just to make you envious this will be my first GGP listened to on my new iPodTouch. Should be good.
Pretty lazy telling us to go to keith’s blog to see what he talked about before we listen to show

Ha cool – let us know what it is like… Glad that were first
Be great also to get more than 2 comments this week.
No different from having show notes, and including that – Keith did not send me any links for the show notes this week so I did not have much choice with what I put there.

I had to laugh when I saw the story about the iMac Thief. It’s amazing what a bit of free software can do to combat crime.
Then I saw it was from Vancouver… and I cried. *sigh*

Ahhh now I have listened to the show. New iPod is awesome BTW.
Ahhhhh XP. I unfortunately have Vista Ultimate on my intel Mac. For what I use it for it’s ok, mostly just gaming and that’s about it. I don’t play really resource intensive games so it works for me in Bootcamp. I did want to put XP on it but when you are offered a FREE copy of Vista Ultimate you accept it.
Amazon MP3 download store sounds good but I just read your latest blog post and maybe it isn’t a great idea but we will see. I have an iPod and basically am happy getting stuff through iTunes but I probably haven’t bought a whole lot of albums on there and therefore not hurting too much. If I did have iTunes bought songs and wanted to use them on another device there are ways around it that any geek knows.
Fox shows on iTunes. Well as we don’t have Tv shows here in Aus it’s not a big deal for me but from what I have heard they are as you mentioned there reject shows and if IIRC you hae to get several shows in a bundle whether you like it or not.
Ahhhh mobile phones. I agree there should be universal plugs for all phones for charging and connecting to puters. Not sure USB plug as such in a phone is the way to go but maybe something like that. Not sure Bluetooth is the answer either to be honest but it could be in a few yrs. Maybe wi-fi is better but then again most likely less secure for non-geeks or tech-savvy people who know how to protect themselves.
I don’t mind if Google puts contextual ads on Youtube pages but if they do pre-rolls you can’t skip they will kill their business faster than you can say.
I really think sometimes Tim gets so carried away on his rants he isn’t sure what he is saying or makes much sense. Some of his objections for some technologies are really odd to say the least. The way he carried on about Google putting ads on Youtube was a tad overboard and then his love affair was almost like he created the damned thing.
I don’t mind some passion about stuff but make it a worthy cause, not something petty like that.

@Kodo
Running vista on a mac is like crapping on a wedding dress.
@ Dave and Tim
I love the fact that you don’t like Vista
@Maclabrat
Yeah ! Its a great plugin for Flickr and Fotobooth but i’ve accendenly posted a picture of my unshaved-6am-not realy awake face to flickr that way (and i did not find out untill 2 days later)

I finally listened on thursday, but now im going away again for a week and cant download the podcast via my laptop. Or can I? Can i keep things on my ipod and add something from another PC?… i digress
@ KW lol, only you would use that example. Your thought process is interesting.
@All – some of the laptops at work have Vista, good lord what a pain. Thank god im not responsible for IT.
The universal plugs on the mobiles is a good idea, i have a Motorla V6, not because im too much of a noob or mobile fan boy (quote much earlier podcast) but because it was the best of a bad bunch when NextG was launched. The charge plug and usb plug are same hole which is good so i can charge off my laptop when away.
I did see a universal charger in Woolworths the other day for running a phone when its flat. Potentially a good idea.
I have a suggestion, lets have a Tim soapbox. People can send stuff in and we can let him loose on a topic.
My first is how NextG although covering more square kilometers than CDMA still is shite. As for the download costs for internet….
Im laughing already.
