Perfect iTunes Equalizer Settings?
I read this article a week or so ago, but wanted to test it out before I posted anything. The article originally appeared on MAC OS X HINTS, believe it or not in 2004! But the article has been re-blogged recently. Personally I thought that the software would have changed enough so that it made the details obsolete. But maybe not.
Even though I deal with audio in depth and on a regular basis I actually struggle a bit with setting the equalizer! I am fine with voice stuff (that’s what I do). But as far as setting it so that I get the best out of my music, I end up thinking well that sounds OK for me… can’t be buggered with it anymore. I have no idea if it sounds “good” to anyone else. Or even if it is “right”. Admittedly a lot of this comes down to personal taste, room and how you listen – headphones or speakers (crap or expensive).
The settings seem a little extreme in my opinion, I don’t care how bad your mp3 compression is. But still it is one individuals opinion of the perfect iTunes EQ settings. I found after testing it, it does tend to make your music a little “tinny” with not enough base, especially with headphones (which I use almost exclusively – and no they are not cheap ones). However the vocals and different instruments are easily distinguished from each other and the music seems to be “crisper”.
Me I need a bit more base and something closer to the flat master settings. As well as that I do a fair bit of mucking around with my audio settings so that they are right for recording and editing. However having iTunes separate I can monkey with that as much as I like, ever on the search for the perfect settings.
These are the settings for the iTunes EQ touted as “perfect”:
db +3, +6, +9, +7, +6, +5, +7, +9, +11, +8 db
So what do you guys think, and how do you set your iTunes EQ and then if at all?
Oh and while I am talking about music; I’d like to say I am stoked that Matchbox Twenty is bringing out a new album. It’s Okay, you guys can flame me, I am a big fan and you won’t change my mind… Listening to them now actually

I use winamp to play my music files but recently, Pandora has taken over my ears and they don’t offer an equalizer.
