The Global Geek Podcast #062 :: Apple Apple Everywhere

Welcome to the Geek for this week, one day later this week the reasons for which you will have to listen.

Tech news this week is dominated by Apple but you get our take on it. But we have also shoved some other cool news in there as well.

Apps this week contains nothing Apple. But what we do have is a free, open source video editor, a do anything downloader and something for rock concerts.

Sites and services this week takes us places where there is no social network, such as a site dedicated to all things pointless, a service that helps you with colour and a site dedicated to beautiful desktops.

All this and more including your feedback, a few updates, featured Firefox extensions and the GGP Mac Lab Update with Keith Murray.

Just listened to the feedback section of the show, and I think my message was not properly understood.

I was trying to get across that there are listeners of your podcast that use Twitter. Instead of hearing an update that pertained to that service, I was simply told that the update was shit. Why couldn’t you say what the update was capable of, then labeling it as shit. Don’t get me wrong but I love the AGREE DISAGREE stuff as it spices up the show.

I disagree with KW and Tim’s stance on web 2.0 You guys are complaining about the saturation of all the social crap that the web is turning into. Web 2.0 is a stepping stone towards the semantic web. Why not cover the news stories that talk about what web 2.0 has enabled, and I’d love to hear stories that deal with the possibilities of web 3.0. Stories that give a TOP-LOOKING down perspective.

Cover companies or startups that are consolidating your online presence. Services such as LifeStreaming are going to be the next big thing. You guys make it seem like 1999 was the best days of the web.

I’m not trying to shape your show, these are all merely suggestions and even more feedback.

  3. Jeffro2pt0 Says:

Oh and if you want some good reading please read this article http://howtosplitanatom.com/news/how-to-define-web-30-2/ and let me know what you think about it.

  4. Eric Says:

So the free iphone unlocker should be out in the next 24 hours. Sure you guys dont want an iphone?

  5. Dave Gray Says:

    @BlogSlut typical

@Jeff I think there are some great services out there, seriously. But not only that these great services are getting a lot harder to find among the rubbish. There is more to what makes the web great than a social network. Not only that the whole idea Web 2.0 is as you should know not really Web 2.0. The semantic web that you refer to is really Web 2.0. We use the term Web 2.0 loosely to describe the lots of concepts: the look, the way people use the internet, AJAX coding and lots of other things to describe what the web is today. I agree the web is a better place now than it ever was but the internet is essentially the same at the code level as it was in 1999.

I have been watching this space for quite some time now and in all honesty the main source of new stuff is a new social network. Or something built around one. The time is coming when that social networking space will start to implode because of this. No, I am not saying it is a bubble but THAT particular part of the web is. There are too many social networks and of those social networks there are not that many that are excellent. The rest are doomed.

I am not really sure that Web 2.0 Social Networks are a stepping stone to anywhere just yet. The dust needs to settle a lot more and the space to mature before anyone can make calls about where it is going. Right now it is just the early adopters that are involved in the space. Lets see what happens when it goes more mainstream.

In essence I guess we want to be blown away, there ain’t that much doing that. There are a lot of online commentators that are feeling the same way.

That said I appreciate your feedback :) Not sure I agree with your point about Life Streaming. But sure I think we will see more of it. We have covered some of these services though (istalker for one). The internet is an exciting place though and I do look forward to seeing what it comes up with next! Thanks Jeff.

@Eric Pass on the iPhone :)

What do u mean typical. I am never the first poster. I was only complaining to Cam late last nite about no show and I wake up this morning and it was here so thought I would post. haven’t had a chance to listen yet though, will on way home.

I have listened to first 5-10 mins and was something I wanted to comment on, but damned if I remember it now.. phooey.

  7. Knightwise Says:

@blogslut .. you probably just wanted to cheer that I was in the intro and set a high quality tone for the entire show… .. you know that that is what you wanted to say …

  8. Dave Gray Says:

    @BlogSlut OK I take it back…

@Knightwise you also get the award for the longest audio feedback ever :) I gotta say though that I laughed my head off at that intro…

  9. Jeffro2pt0 Says:

Ok. I listened to the entire show and for whatever reason, I really enjoyed this episode more so than the last. In fact, Tim made me crack up quite a few times :P

I’ll say that I agree with KW, Tim and Dave in that social networking is out of control. Everyone and their mother seems to require a social network even if they don’t understand the reasoning behind having one. These companies/businesses just think they need one because everyone else has one.

Now, KW states that all of these social networks are going to stretch the userbase to levels that are so low, the entire social networking scene is going to implode. I disagree. I have discussed this topic with Dave at another time and I still stick by my reasoning that, the free market otherwise known as, the users themselves, will dictate which social networks stay, and which ones fall by the wayside.

Early adopters seem to enjoy switching from one social network to the next. However, there are quite a few people who are becoming less and less adamant about switching to a new network. I think that a lot of users are reaching their tolerance point, in terms of network switching. These people will simply stop joining new networks and stay on the ones that they can contribute to, as well as keeping in touch with their friends. So I believe that, users will determine which social networks stick around, long before the entire scene collapses on itself.

You know it’s funny. All of the people associated with this web 2.0 mumbo jumbo is made up of mostly early adopters. This is not the hugest audience, yet these are the people who are making and breaking startups. It’s like a culture within a culture. It’s amazing how many people outside of the culture don’t have a clue as to what is happening on the web.

  10. Dave Gray Says:

    @Jeff DING! I agree.

  11. Dave Gray Says:

@Jeff it was a bit chaotic this week. Maybe it was that? We are letting the show be a bit more spontaneous as that is what we have got from feedback. It was fun as usual. But Skype is letting us down a bit lately. The call quality has been crap and the network for whatever reason is nowhere near as stable as it was 6 months ago.

    Glad you enjoyed it :)

  12. Knightwise Says:

@Jeffro : When I say the social networking scene is going to implode I don’t mean that its gonna vanish alltogether (that would be EXplode) its just gonna shrink down to the cream of the crop of social networks where users hang out because it has something they can contribute to. Social networks that offers something to the user, more then just “being a part of it”. Thus the free market will decide what services are good and which ones are not. But the multi membership days where your attentionspan is so stretched out over a number of social networks .. are numbered ! ( and thats a “knightwise”*)

    * Gutsy prediction that WILL come true !

  13. Kodo Says:

@KW How is Digg doing mate?

  14. Herne Says:

Tim, what’s your deviantART account name again? You said it too fast for me to catch it. I have a dA account myself.

  15. Jeffro2pt0 Says:

In that case Knightwise, I fully agree with you. I think were all in agreement now! LOL

  16. Jeffro2pt0 Says:

Tim’s account is http://groovearmy.deviantart.com/ and mine is http://0wn4g3.deviantart.com/

  17. hugh Says:

Great show guys, now as a relative newcomer to your fan base I’ve been meaning to ask, knightwise is mentioned a lot, did he use to be on the show ?
Which one above is the blog slut?
    Dr evil ?
Its like coming in half way through a season of Home and Away, without Kate Ritchie of course
    Mmmmm…… Kate Ritchie

  18. Knightwise Says:

@ Hugh. I used to be a regular host on the show. Now i’m just the pretty one (see nice face on banner on the top) now i’m the resident stalker / voice of reason. Just see me as the “Charlie” in Charlies angels.

@Kodo : Another peep from you and i’ll enlist you in my bot army ;)

@Jeffro : Its nice to agree.

@Cameron Reilly : I blame you for the fact that Hale Berry is pregnant and that I’m not the father !

  19. Herne Says:

Thanks Jeffro2pt0. Mine is http://foxdesigns.deviantart.com as long as we’re tossing addresses around!

  20. Knightwise Says:

@ hugh : Kate Ritchie ? : Not THAT pretty

  21. Dave Gray Says:

@hugh yeah it is getting a bit like that round here. Here’s the info to bring you up to speed:

Knightwise: Ex. Co-host now GGP stalker. Oh, and a good friend of the GGP. But a big fan and supporter of what we are doing.

BlogSlut: goes by many names, BlogSlut being one of them, Kodo and GGPbot among others and rarely known as Tony. He has so many aliases that I have trouble keeping up with the approval of comments.

Dr Evil: is a big mystery, noone knows who he is. But if you go back enough shows we actually ran a series of Dr Evil skits… Known to be currently hanging out with Knightwise. But even that is unconfirmed.

The header art is a result of not being updated… Ask Tim. But that is KW on the left and me on the right… Tim’s picture has not surfaced… we suspect that KW has something to do with that.

Anything else about this wacky community you want to know just ask and don’t listen to Knightwise - he is a little bent at the best of times :)

  22. Dave Gray Says:

@Jeff thanks for filling people in - I can’t get to reply to comments quick enough at times. Ta.

  23. Knightwise Says:

Who hooked up the GGP webserver to Cams Xmass lights ?

  24. Tony Says:

I need to somehow find a better time to listen to the shows than on the way home on the train. I slept right through the middle of the show.

Also it makes more sense to blame me for music choices as there is no God. And why are there 2 music tunes in show notes but I only heard one at the end, or did I sleep through it?

Would have liked to have heard the japanese song. Half of my ipod is full of Japanese stuff I can’t understand.
