Global Opposite
Ever wanted to know what was on the direct opposite side of the world to where you are right now? Me too. There is a name for this, in geography the antipodes of any place is the place on earth opposite where you are if joined by a straight line. Now you can grab the globe on the mantle piece and start shoving skewers through it or you can check out this cool Google Maps Mash-up I found.
Antipodes Map is two Google maps on the same page. On the top map you select the place on earth you want and on the lower map it tells you the matching antipode on the other side of the globe.
Here in Australia if you make reference to the other side of the globe you often refer to China. It seems us Aussies are a bit misguided as the other side of the globe is nowhere near China. The other side of the world for me is the North Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Morocco!
Nice mash-up to satisfy a curiosity.

This is cool. I always wanted to know where the other side of the world from me was. Looks like it’s a ways S.E. of the coast of Madagascar. Thanks for the cool site!

I’ve seen this before, but in this instance. Pretty cool to know though that if I were to dig a whole straight down to the other side of the planet, I would drown myself southwest of Australia

Very cool . Now every time i tell my kids “it’s on the other side of the world” i’ll know exactly were that is.

Found you via Google! thanks for this. It’s answered the questions of my partner’s 3 lads. Last year we moved from the Uk to the Canary Islands… and this was one of their questions. We now know that the opposite s a little to the right of Australia.
Thanks!

Slow day at work and I was telling a co-worker I would like to be as far away from here as possible. turns out that would be in the middle of the Indian Ocean, I’ve located 2 nice islands close to the point. One has great looking black sand beaches and great surf and the other is a volcano. At this point I’m deciding which island to send each of my co-workers to:-)
