The Global Geek Podcast #055 :: We Are Baaaaaaack!
The title says it all and we are happy to say that Dave has moved and settled in to some degree, Tim has some news as well. Get all the in depth details about all that plus we slip in some of the usual content you have come to expect from the geek.
This week in Tech News we could not help but notice a strange use of public money and some crooks that at least knew how to use Google. On a serious note we have an auspicious birthday and a very spoilt 75 year old, what to do if you get sued and SONY gets serious as the rootkit bungle refuses to die.
We have some great free and one cheap applications that we thought were cool including an application to sync iTunes with ANY portable device, something to enhance your Windows Shell and the changing face of applications with an application from Facebook that allows you to be honest - brutal if you wish.
All that and more plus your feedback on this weeks show. Thanks for listening!

Damn that was quick going up on iTunes. Cool.
NP Jeff - it was out of sympathy dude… although we did blame you for a few things, but it was all good fun
July 17th, 2007 at 3:41 am
Good to see you are back and the move went well. just listened to the show and loved it as always. InviteShare sounds like a cool site and so does Blabberize will give them a try.

Welcome back, guys!
Just a side note on the .NET Framework 3.0, it was released back in the fall, but with very little fanfare. It’s basically nothing more than .NET Framework 2.0 with some new extensions.
btw… Thanks for the mention, looking forward to doing up some “Mac Lab Rat” reviews!

*yay*. Now I have to wait until next monday before i get time to listen to it.

Hi guys. Listened to show on way home and it was most entertaining, good to hear you back.
Blame Jeff? Jeff seems to have good taste in music then
Not a whole lot to say. I think Sony don’t have a chance in hell of winning their lawsuit. They had duty of care to check that the program did what they wanted before they put it on all the CD’s. If their testing was thorough enough they would have discovered the root kit.
Based on what you said about where you moved to Dave I have a good idea where you moved to. It is also great having digital and even better HD free to air TV. I’ll follow up with you later on that when I see you onine.
Have a good one and catch ya all later

Hmm just checked your blog and your a lot further north than I thought. Still your not far from Nimbin so plenty of drugs and free love nearby
July 18th, 2007 at 7:58 pm
Gee thanks for the insight Tony… we’ll blame you for something next week
You can check my Facebook profile as to where
I am with you on the SONY thing I think they had an obligation to be aware of what was going on “their” disks. But then this is US law and anything can happen.
Thanks Jeff, George, Pete, Keith and Tony we can always rely on you guys to drop us a line!

Great show guys. You two are hilarious at times. Good thing I work the night shift at the store or else people would really think I’m weird, laughing to myself.
I think Sony is still on the road of blunders. Their PR department wanted to make it look as though the PS3 was receiving a price cut. One of the higher ups at Sony told the press, No their were not going to be any price cuts. One week later their are price cuts. That makes the executive and Sony, look pretty bad. You might even call them liars.
I agree with you whole heartedly about InviteShare.com and what it could do for new companies and the way they hand out their invites. I can easily see down the road where new startups issue one invitation instead of 10 when the service launches. Over time they give those users 2-3 invites to steadily gain more traffic and numbers. That would solve the influx of people issue to a large degree and in some respects, would generate more buzz and an even higher demand for the invitations. Hell, you might even be able to make a buck or two by selling them on Ebay. Don’t laugh because people are already selling invites on Ebay.
I published a small review about TGGP. Hopefully you guys gain some new listeners through it .http://www.jeffro2pt0.com/the-global-geek-podcast-returns/
One last thing. I actually enjoyed that song which was blamed on me lol. Thanks for your compassion guys but I give the other Jeff props for turning the idea into a reality.

Every time I open up Itunes and check my podcasts subscriptions, it keeps downloading Episode 55 of TGGP. Is this happening for anyone else? Itunes has downloaded it 3 times now…
July 20th, 2007 at 10:31 am
Nope not me Jeff, must be something to do with either your install of iTunes or the way in which it is connecting.
Look at it this way: there is nothing that I can do to cause this to happen - all I do is upload an .mp3 to our servers. iTunes hooks into the RSS feed. iTunes like any RSS reader looks at the feed and updates like any other RSS reader.
This is actually something that is commendable about iTunes. The podcasting section of iTunes is in fact a very fancy looking RSS reader - just for podcasts. The fact that it is so easy to use makes the accessibility so good for everyone. Even people that don’t realize that they are subscribing to an RSS feed when they hit the subscribe button… anyway I digress…
The short answer is that I am providing the data for the feed. Individual copies of iTunes “read” that data. What they do with that data should be the same across all copies of iTunes. If your copy is doing something different then there might be something wrong with your copy.
However, it would be possible if we were changing the code of our RSS feed that this might cause a new ping to iTunes which would make it think a new version is available and download the latest. This happened to Cam’s feed not long ago when they changed some plugin’s in his WordPress install. We however have not touched our feed… back to theory 1.
That said is anyone else having an issue? If the answer is a definate no - you have your answer Jeff. Otherwise “Huston we have a problem”.
Try reinstalling iTunes.

Yeah, I have actually had some other problems involving other podcasts. Sometimes, the info for the mp3 file is missing and the file is just named DOWNLOAD in my Itunes/Podcasts folder. I think my Itunes is screwed up.
July 21st, 2007 at 3:52 am
Glad you guys are back and everything is going well.
Sorry nobody volunteered to help you out. Most podcasts have poor audio quality and mediocre delivery. I dont know how many shows I’m putting on my mp3 players but most of them sound terrible. That said, the delivery, content and sound quality of your show are really exceptional. Given what you’re delivering, I think it would be extremely difficult for most of your listeners to do a mini-show and keep up the incredible quality. Maybe that’s why nobody offered to help. You guys sound like professional radio hosts.
btw - I think you can get a high end S60 3rd edition Nokia for free if you shop around. I assume Australia is GSM. At least in the united states and western europe you can get great S60 phones with a 2 year contract.
oh, there’s a synctunes for mac as well.

Nokia has an interesting beta, Nokia Media Transfer…
You can create a playlist in itunes and sync over BT [ slow but it works ]

Eric, very kind words. We can appreciate that most people would be a bit daunted by being on the show.
Thanks for the recognition for the effort we make to give you guys the best quality possible. Your right - most podcasts sound bloody awful and it beats me as to why. I would not release anything that was as bad as most are. But then again people must listen to it. It is all about the content.
Make sure you and all our listeners tell their friends and others about the show and then they will be able to enjoy it as well
Thanks for the tip on synctunes. Must not forget our Mac buddies!

Just wanted to let you guys know that Eric stopped by my Jaiku channel to let me know that if I was running the older version of Itunes (Pre 7.1.3) that it was probably the problem. As it turns out, he was correct. Updating to 7.1.3 seems to have solved my problems. Thanks Eric!

First of all, you do NOT have to mention this msg. in your next podcast. I have been allotting this whole email thing some cogitation space, since you said that you did not have the time (also,-and I did not take offense - that it was archaic) to post your shows via email.
Today, on slashdotreview, Andy McCasky said that kids thought email was out of date (using texting and social networks, except when messaging adults and work).
Here’s my take: First of all, I just don’t have time, like others who MUST stay up with the latest websites, etc., to go to all my RSS feeders to get podcasts. I subscribe to Blubrry, iTunes, NewsGator, and Yahoo (GGP is on Yahoo). Also, I don’t have time to text my friends all day, even if I were more adept at fast texting. Although I DO belong to several social network websites, - again, I don’t have time to go there every couple minutes to check on new msgs.
What?!! Doesn’t anyone work anymore? Does everyone have to be in school or working at a job where they can just interact with friends all day?
I DO have to look at my email - a LOT. Because work is sent to me that way. SO…., like Todd Cochrane, Andy McCasky, and Chris Pirillo, if someone sends me notice that they have a new podcast or blog out via my work email - I know right away that it is there for me to pick up. Todd Cochrane of GNC even embeds a player.
GGP is the only podcast that I take time to go over to the website (since Yahoo isn’t always on time with new stuff from your site)every Monday (here on US East Coast) to see if you’ve gotten a new podcast out.
So, call me “oldschool”, but I try to get the most done I can in the least amt. of time. I know that it’s a lot of trouble to post to all your fans’ email addresses. But, just know that it makes it MUCH easier for many of us to get to you that way.
But, GGP is definitely worth the extra keystrokes to get your input. So…It’s Monday, where is the podcast??!! Brie in DC
July 24th, 2007 at 12:13 am
Hey Brie! Thanks for the comment. I have nipped over to the blog to reply from the mixing bench here at the GGP (thats where the next podcast is…) But your worth it
This week was a hard week to put together so it is a few hours late. It will be out later if Cam is up or tomorrow if he isn’t… anyway.
To cut to the point. Glad that you did not take offense as none was intended at all.
Second, I know that Yahoo is slack at posting new material. But I know for a fact that iTunes is damn quick, just wondering why you don’t get the show there?
BUT I think the best solution for you if you want an email notification of the show being posted would be to subscribe to the blog updates via email:
http://www.feedburner.com/fb/a/emailverifySubmit?feedId=710683
I am not subscribed to it so I don’t know if it has a player in it. But at least you’ll know that there is a show available.
I appreciate what you are saying though and everyone is different in how they consume media. However, here on this network we don’t have that much control over how our content is distributed. The management of TPN control the feeds and other ways to subscribe. So we are bound within those restrictions or boundaries if you like. We have done our best to provide as easy access to the show as possible.
We realize how valuable your time is and we appreciate your effort to visit the site and check to see if a new show is posted.
I just thought of another way to get notified. If you use Thunderbird then it has RSS functionality built in. Why not subscribe to the RSS feed there? But I can appreciate that if you are using a work PC then it probably has MS software installed. Still it is another option.
If all else fails I think the above email subscription to updates would suit you best. Just ignore the updates that are not a podcast
If other podcasts are putting a player into an email then they are putting in a heap of effort and time or they are paying someone to do it. As it stands now I put in 10’s of hours per episode, plus blogging plus responding to listeners and trying to generate sponsors and other GGP related stuff on top of that. To manually put together an email, that has to be HTML coded with a player would add to what I am already doing. I make a lot of sacrifices (as well as my family) to be and give all that I can to the show. I too do not have the time to do what you are asking.
I apologize that we can not fulfill your needs as far as being notified and being able to play the show in email. But I hope that we have provided every way that we are able to make it accessible with the tools available to us with the time that we have.
Thanks again for your ongoing loyalty to the show and your support, we try to take care of our long term listeners
