iPhone launch… woo…hoo…

The iPhone

Well the official day is upon us. The glorious day that the iPhone is released (in America at least), and as I’m sure that a butt load of people are already foaming at the mouth over the glorious UI design that is famous in the latest round of Apple products, there are some people who are not all too pleased about dropping $600.00 USD on their 8gb model.

Thanks to social network media we have the very first person to drop an iPhone, just mere seconds outside an Apple store.

Now I’m not sure what that plastic piece that fell off the front of his iPhone was (because every other video they don’t have one on the device, just a thin film) but if I just threw 600 bucks at a device, that sound would probably make me want to weep.

So everyone stayed up for hours, and sat out the front of a store to be the “First” person to have one… except the fact that the iPhone is in such supply that there are still thousands of them available from Apple stores.

It turns out that Apple may have over estimated the need for the iPhone as the guys from Ars Technica tell us in their article iPhones iPlenty: the sell-out that wasn’t

The following video is from Revision3 in the latest episode of Systm where they unbox, stress test, and disassemble the iPhone right outside the store they purchased it from.

(warning: video is quite large)

Now with all the hype that the iPhone has had since the 9th of January 2007, you’d think that Apple would have some big promises to fill to make this the next “Killer Device” much like its iPod was…

However, many people are already complaining about the iPhone and its lack of options/features that probably would tip the scales and make this one of the best mobile devices.

Things like:

  • Lack of replaceable battery
  • Easily scratched (and broken, watch the Revision3 episode above)
  • Slow response via wireless internet browsing
  • No 3G capabilities (just AT&T EDGE, which is like strapping a 56k modem to a brick and asking it to surf the web)
  • Bluetooth that connects ONLY to headset devices (no Bluetooth PC transfer)
  • No Flash Support
  • And the list goes on… (and on, and on, and on)

Be mindful though that when 1G of the iPod came out it was a killer device but had about 1/3 of the features present in a modern 5G model, but still the original iPod did come through with its promises, not that the iPhone doesn’t do that (it is a phone after all) its just being let down by a handful of things that could be better!

And now for the kicker…

How long do you think it will be until the iPhone is available in other countries? Well considering that AT&T have the market cornered for a 1 year period, and only then will it be opened up to a few other AMERICAN network providers (Verizon… etc..) then we can pretty well assume that it could be at least a year before some countries will even see it.

Europe is slated to have a September release date (as best as we know) and Asia is supposed to be sometime in 2008, but can the rest of the world wait for a phone that looks amazing, but delivers a sub-par experience through features that could have been much better?

Probably not…

Hi. The clear plastic is between the iphone and the lower compartment with all the accessories. Junk to help fill our starving landfills. Meanwhile the N75 is FAR from AT&T/Amazon with real 3G and a real smartphone OS.

One suspicion. What if the iPhone has 3G and they’re just gonna turn it on in 6 months? mmmmm? The vodaphone and T-mobile [de] press releases might come today.

It does indeed look like a beautiful device, and it’s been very entertaining watching the fans work themselves into a state approaching some sort of mania leading up to the release day, but I think we can just leave them to get on with it for now - lets see what the consensus is in 6 months time, then we’ll have an idea of wether the phone is going to achieve “greatness” or not.
