GGP Widget Bling for your website…
Actual Widget… Start Clicking!
Just when you thought you’d have a quiet weekend without any posts from the Global Geek Podcast to read while you sip wine from a golden goblet in your cashmere dressing gown, here is another post to keep you going until the next episode!
But this time its a little special…
You see while having some fun with Ajax Framework effects over at my new blog OneInchPixel.com, I thought about some of the cool uses of Ajax in widgets.
20 minutes later… (and some left over pizza) and here we have it, the Global Geek Podcast Embeddable Widget v1.0!
Basically this widget takes the standard RSS feed directly from the Global Geek page and transforms it into a bunch of boxes that slide up and down when you click on the titles of them, which my not sound like much, but damn its cool to play with!
The best part of all is that you the reader/listeners can use it on your blog/site as well, WITHOUT complicated code, all you have to do is put this anywhere you would like it to go:
<script type=”text/javascript”src=”http://www.adamfakes.com/GGP/rsswidget/GGPembed.js”></script>
Place it in the side bar, throw it on your header, whack it in a post, you can do all this and more!
Oh and for those of you who use Wordpress you can either do as above and paste it directly into your sidebar template, otherwise if you have the Widgets Plugin, are running Wordpress 2.2 or you are a Wordpress.com user, then simply do the following:
- Login to your Wordpress account
- Click on Presentation
- Go to Widgets
- Add a text widget to your sidebar
- Paste the above code into the main text area (not the title)
- and check it outrunning in your sidebar.
So grab the code above, throw it onto your site and show your love for the GGP!

Hello.
That’s pretty spiffy Tim.
Have you thought about creating a widget for Widsets?
It’s not the greatest platform but they did have about a million downloads the last couple months.
Widsets has point and click widget creator but its not as attractive as what we’ve seen you produce.

Widsets seems pretty cool Eric.
Being designed for mobile phone apps its an area that most haven’t really broken in to.
I like the idea of user generated widgets, but they have a long way to go to allow the user decent control over the widget themes and styling.

Nice stuff Tim, great work!
We should get Cam to shove this into our sidebar as a way for readers to quickly get a summary of what the latest articles have been on the blog.
Smooth code too dude. Love it… You seem to always pull this stuff out of thin air. Very cool.
