Digg Clone from India

Okay this one made me laugh my head off. Seriously funny stuff. This is nothing new from the perspective that it is another Digg clone. We have seen them before right. But I bet you have never seen one from India…

Called Mirchh this is a brand new Indian based start-up and it is the way that they are doing things that had me in stitches.

This particular clone has the usual Headlines equivalent to the Digg front page. It also has an Up and Coming section and a Submit page. All sounds familiar so far. Now most Digg clones and Digg itself base ranks and stories on the number of “votes”, but this is nearly always a numerical representation to indicate how many. Or how “hot” something is… Speaking of hot.

Chilli VotingMirchh has chosen a slightly different approach to indicate how hot a story is and what better to use than a chilli. Yes no kidding Chilli, as in the ones that you eat. With the wonder of Ajax you can move the level of heat you think the story is worth up the length of the chilli. The doted line gives you the average. There is a number underneath the chilli for each story, but I am not sure what this represents. It is kind of like what you see on the label of the chilli sauce to indicate how much heart burn the dish is going to give you.

While I think this is funny, I am not sure how useful the results will be. The system is flawed in so much as it is as open to gaming as any “voting” site as I can not see anything that prevents it. Just register and mark your chilli! But all in all a very novel way to approach the genre.

I think it is quite an interesting play on the Digg system. How do you bury something with this chili? I can only guess that if you move the chili meter more than halfway to the right, it means you like the story and if the meter is before the halfway point, it represents that you don’t like the store.

As for the number, I think it represents the number of people who think the story is hot. That’s the only thing I can think of.
