The Global Geek Podcast #53 :: Anyone Seen Our Lear Jet?
Here is your serve of the Geek this week. This was a massive week for news and “stuff” in general. Plus had an absolute blast recording the show. We hope that you enjoy it as much as we did.
This week was the week for acquisitions, mergers, launches and left field Technology news. Tim and I even give you a few tips for posting unique gifts.
We have reviewed some great software as well this week including a most excellent plugin for Picasa and one particular application that Tim and I have opposing views on, completely. We don’t have a full on fight about it but it makes for interesting listening and just why two heads are better than one. But at least it is a balanced opinion.
We have found some great sites for you to visit to be able to; create screencasts, learn about human search engines, listen to the earth and find a travel destination.

Thanks for the good words about FeedDemon! Good luck on your move, Dave (I consider moving to be a special kind of hell).
June 5th, 2007 at 2:41 pm
Another great show. It’s ok you guys hate punk music and the 3rd screen.
I dugg the show.
I think it’s fine when the show runs long. That just more time I spend walking in the park.
How about that iphone eh?
Sorry. Cant stop myself.
June 5th, 2007 at 7:46 pm
@Nick Thanks for the encouragement, I need all that I can get atm! We love FD don’t need much of an excuse to talk about it. Now can we have the ability to order articles in our news bins?
@Eric Yeah sorry mate I don’t especially like punk, but I did not mind playing some for you… I don’t think that many people liten to the track anyway
Thanks for the ongoing support and if someone says iPhone again I think I am going to scream… damnit I said it Aghhhhhhhhhhh

Dr Evil and I have stolen the complete first shipments of Iphones and are holding them for ransom in the GGP learjets cargo hold. Bidding on ebay starts at 1000 dollars US.

Hey guys, another Firefox tip that came to mind when you mentioned the hide menubar extension. It may be stating the obvious for a lot of people, but you can drag all the address bar controls *into* the menubar and then just hide the address bar, like so:
http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/374/uberbarji2.jpg
Especially if you have a widescreen monitor, there’s lots and lots of room to the right of the menu items for the address bar, and you can reclaim that big strip of vertical space without having to give up your menus.

Hey guys!, thanks for all the comments!
The next comment is from Chris Saad, I think he had intended it to go here, so I’ve moved it!
June 6th, 2007 at 11:57 am
Hey guys - awesome show! It reminds me of my good old days of geek radio on Radioactive. Miss that big time.
Loved the review of Particls - we love hearing both good and constructive feedback it keeps us amped to do the next build.
Some inside info for you:
There was a request to get every item from the feed through the ticker irrespective of if it matches your attention profile or not. If you go into the advanced tab and rate the source as ‘Strongly Like’ all the posts should come through.
We agree about the ticker real-estate problem - stay tuned for a thin and auto-hide mode for it
The initial bandwidth issues will be worked on too- we have not spent any time optimizing that yet and it is well overdue.
And we are also working on a faster learning curve with some cleverer (yes that’s a word) algorithms on the way.
Thanks again gents!

Oh and for all those people wanting to see what Peter was talking about… Here is the pic!

Looks like Classic Gray to me ! I’m still amazed he has his clothes on.
Ps : What are all those boxes ni the back ? are you dealing in Taiwaneese Ripoff Furby’s or something ?

They are your iPhones Knightwise…
June 6th, 2007 at 7:38 pm
Are you guys on crack or trying to goad me into posting again??
I never said I was trying to install Bootcamp inside Parallels, may have said I was installing Bootcamp AND Parallels though.
Anyways for Mac update news I got my new shiny 24 inch iMac on Thursday night, makes 17 inch look like a laptop in comparison. Installed Winblows Vista and instaled a ew games and had some fun. Leave for work on Mon morning and screen goes blank and fan starts blowing like a lear jet.
News is Apple repair will be visiting to try and fix it…4 days and it’s broken
For those of you buying Macs try and get the Applecare.
I will have a further update when i know what’s happening.
Music wise last weeks punk song was pretty good compared to that crap at the end of this weeks show. What the hell was that supposed to be anyway?
June 6th, 2007 at 8:49 pm
@Tony shit news about the Apple dude. But in my opinion, you should not have to purchase the right to have a product where if you have a problem it is fixed promptly and in full. That is crap that in order to get good service you have to wait or whatever. Crap. Keep us updated dude.
Glad you liked the music… Tim will be pleased to know that you thought it was tops. It will at least stir him from his drunken, drug induced sleep long enough to do another show.
As always dude great to have you drop a comment on the blog… even if you do abuse us it is better than nothing…
June 6th, 2007 at 10:46 pm
Tony - all products in Australia should be “fit for purpose” when purchased, if it’s not, you’re legally entitled to a full refund.
June 6th, 2007 at 11:25 pm
@ tony:)
- Either your Imac is envious of Tims Harrier Jumpjet
- Or its not your Imac that blows .. its just Vista !
a 24″ imac and the man puts vista on it ! Your glad the thing didn’t jump out the window after you installed the OS of hell. Tony .. (godfatherly voice) .. You Disappoint me … Tony .. how can somebody from the family do such a terrible act.
Putting vista on a 24 inch Imac is like having Lindsay Lohan NAKED in your bedroom (willing to do everything) and letting her organise your stamp-collection !

Re: my Applecare comment.
i could have gone back to Myer where I got it and asked them to fix it but that would involved somehow getting it back to the store and then waiting for them to send it back to Apple and maybe get it back in a month. applecare is an extended warranty kind of thing as well and with it i get onsite repairs which is a lot more oconvienient to me at this time. i got a custom built machine so not like I could go back to the store and get a new one off the shelf, if it was that easy I may have done that.
Yea I know putting Vista on it is bad, but Vista does have some very nice wallpapers, which I copied to my OSX partition, and it now also allows me to play games that i couldn’t play for ages. i even renewed my EQ2 account which I hadn’t played for over 2 years and am excited to go back to that..eventually.
June 7th, 2007 at 5:53 am
btw
Dave, good luck on your move and new position. Everyone’s getting new jobs eh? Maybe I need to start looking. Anyone want a FreeBSD/Solaris geek in Singapore or Dubai?
I kid. The wife wants to live in the PRC. bleah!
btw - I get a windows mobile 6 HTC Herald/wing from T-Mobile this week. Only 99$ instead of 500$. How could I pass that up? You can expect more mobile BDs. oh, what the heck is a bluedot anyway?
oh, I really digg the KW/Dr Evol segment.
I’m thinking about putting XP on my 1.8Ghz macbook so I can play WBC2.
Is it weird being ginger? Just wondering. I’m Anglo/Japanese/Mexican. I figure that’s less weird that being ginger. I grew up in a little redneck down too. I feel for you Dave.
ok, I better stop before this turns in my LJ.
s - FreeNAS rocks. It’s still working fine at my wife’s office.
I think NetNewsWire 3 is offical now.

Hi Guys
Another great podcast. Dave, good luck with the move, i moved twice in 18 months last year, cant say i liked it.
I recently churned from one ISP to another going from 512 to 1.5, gotta love my speed, but now I think I need 8.
Nice pick Dave BTW, I wonder by Knightwise went to the VIRGIN Island?

Episode 53
Hello guys. Just wanted to chime in on my thoughts for Episode 53. First of all, I loved the Knightwise, Dr Evil segment with the Leer Jet. I thought that was hilarious. Unfortunately I have been unable to really use Feed Demon as I am still spending quite a bit of time getting my WordPress blog looking just right and getting the plugins installed. But from the little time I have spent using Feed Demon, I must say that it is one heck of a reader and I just may purchase it for future use.
You guys talked about Post2Blog. How would you compare and rate Post2Blog against something like Scribefire (Formerly the Performancing Plugin For Firefox)
Illumino sounds like something I need to get involved with. Perhaps this will help me build a pretty decent feed list.
Awesome show and I look forward to 54!
P.S. Good luck on the move.
June 7th, 2007 at 6:28 pm
Thanks for all the fantastic comments that you guys have left. Sorry I have not been able to reply as my internet connection went down last night and did not return
Timmy mate where are ya?
Thanks to everyone that has sympathized with my move - it is yet to get exciting as we are up to our arses in legals and general crap. But that will improve and we are looking forward to that I can tell ya.
Looks like the Dr Evil and KW segment was a hit… KW feel free to send us more stuff to edit out of context…
@George the problem with 8 is that it is fast but there are bugger all sites that can push it that fast. Believe it or not but iTunes is the fastest at 6000 down - whole album in 8 seconds. Bigger sites like YouTube are pretty quick. It does make a difference though and I love it. Just hope I can get it where I am going!
@Jeff I would definitely avoid scribefire since it has become owned by an ad company. I would check out Post2Blog as it looks great - not used it. But I have used Qumana http://www.qumana.com and it is very good. Major benefit is that it backs up your blog as well as being blogging application as well. The drag and drop feature is awesome - makes for quick posts. Try it for free.
Oh and one last thing before I have to have tea is that I would like to thank the guys that have sent us a MyChingo - if you have not sent us one then give it a try! Also it has been unreal to hook up with you guys on Facebook - to actually “see” you is fantastic. We encourage everyone to hop along to Facebook and join us.
