The Global Geek Podcast #051 :: Skype Does Work on 56k

Welcome to the latest edition of The Global Geek Podcast. You may wonder about the title, suffice to say that Tim’s ISP is having the last laugh…

However, we have been able to record the show! This week in Tech News we look at how one blog was able to swipe 4 billion off Apple, discover what Amazon’s plans for DRM are and revisit the UTube (as in metal pipes) for the latest in that saga.

Applications this week sees our usual pot of free applications such as a password manager for people on the go, plus this week the Firefox Extensions went gang busters and we give you a special large serve of them.

If you have ever dreamed of stargazing then we have found a site just for you. Plus a site that reviews everything and if you can’t choose between twitter or Jaiku; we found a service that means you don’t have to.

Please enjoy The Global Geek Podcast Number 51!

  2. George Says:

Another great show guys, I too agree that KW is missed.

Listened to it this morning while driving and as usual arrived at work better informed than when I left.

I have been meaning to learn more about RSS so please do a RSS special. Save me learning things for myself which is good as im incredibly lazy. Also the dilbert extention is great.

    Cheers

  3. Dave Gray Says:

@Eric KW yeah we miss him too, punk - I will do my best to find some punk for you… no promises… Not sure what to make of the weird MyChingo message… was I supposed to play it? Sorry for not doing so but the audio was errr not so good as in bad… :(

@ George Glad the show is ok without the knight… sorry that he is absent.

@Everyone so far: OK we are getting a resounding YES to the RSS special. We shall start working on it.

  4. Tony Says:

You guys are crazy, trying to guilt me into comment on the show. So I will.

Tim dude go to Internode, just visit the Whirlpool forums and there is a thread there about why do so many people like Internode, and their support is out-sourced to India.

Cam’s article was very interesting, except i had heard it 2 days ago on TGGP. I thought i was reading a transcript of the podcast. Very little in the article that wasn’t mentioned in the show, but I look forward to future articles by The Cam.

The Endgadget thing was the biggest news of last week and was almost fuuny. Would shareholders be able to sue as it appears that Endgadget had done some checking of authenticity before posting after they determined it was a true email. Maybe Apple shouldn’t be circulating fake emails within their network.

I see no reason why Microsoft has to announce how many copies of Vista it has sold. The only reason to do so is that they are worried and trying to reinforce to their shareholders that things are going well.

Downloaded Skype update but I don’t use it that often but I like to keep current. May have to check out those screensavers, could be a lot of fun.

Well that’s all for now, I am sure I will visit again.

  5. Tony Says:

BTW I don’t have my new iMac yet, I had only ordered it but it should be hopefully here tomorrow. I have however been playing with my new 46 inch Sony Bravia X-Series TV. It’s goodly and totally awesome.

  6. Dave Gray Says:

    Yey BlogSlut Lives!

Thanks dude we missed ya! Great news about the Mac! Make sure you let us know how it goes and just how good it is and that way we can drool silently.

Thanks for the Feedback Tony, love your work mate.

  7. Tim Says:

@Tony, I agree with you about Microsoft announcing the amount of copies of Vista that have been sold.

I would LOVE to see some stats on how many copies of the latest Linux platforms have been downloaded (since the release of Vista).

I’m sure that it would totally dwarf the Vista stats.

  8. Jeffro Says:

Awesome show. I feel really good to know that I helped contribute to the show. The TwitKu find is one of those golden nuggets that I found before everyone else did. That sort of thing only happens once a millennium lol. Speaking of Bluedot again, do you guys occasionally get some bogus friend requests which are in the form of spam on blue dot?

Also wanted to pass along that I am representing TGGP even though your nowhere to be found on Jaiku http://jaiku.com/channel/twit/presence/2730221

  9. Nathan Blyth Says:

Great show yet again guys. It amazes me how you guys manage to produce such an awesome podcast as well as hold down regular jobs. Thanks for the awesome reviews. You guys are awesome. Keep up the great work. Cheers, Nathan.

  10. Tim Says:

Thanks Nathan, yeah it can be a bit tough at times working around the schedules, but we get it done in the end!

Happy you liked the reviews as well!

    Cheers!

  11. Dave Gray Says:

@Nathan thanks dude. Yeah we are amazed ourselves some weeks - this week was total arse - we had feed issues and Tim was capped - we had everything against us - but it is good to know the show came out well. Thanks Nathan for your comments and support. Tell your mates!

  12. Dave Gray Says:

@Jeff - sorry mate missed you up there: Yeah that was nice work with that find - very cool. Believe it or not but both Tim and I have Jaiku accounts. But while we liked it as far as features go - the features like feeds into your Jaiku stream are pretty poor on the performance front, so we have not used it much. BUT we really appreciate the plug you gave us thank you very much.

Always good to have user content. This is part of what we are trying to do. We want our listeners to feel like they have a community here and that they can be actively involved in it. We are glad that we can count on you guys to regularly comment and drop links. I thought that maybe you guys might think that you are doing what we should be doing, that is far from it. We have so much stuff it comes out our ears… but we will always choose something from the listeners if we get it.

As far as Blue Dot - yeah be selective with who you add - same as twitter - some are just linkers peddling their wares and splogs etc. Just have a look at their dots - that usually gives it away :)

Keep up the great work and of course listening to the show! Cheers
