2D not Enough then go 3D

We have talked about twittervision and just this week flickrvision on the show and on the blog before. Both these pages use a 2D representation or flat map to represent where tweets and geo-tagged flickr photos are coming from. Now 2D is cool but how about 3D?

Both twittervision and flickrvision have been released in a 3D format. Utilizing the JavaScript API for Poly9’s FreeEarth these pages then plugin the API for Flickr and twitter to produce the pages that you see. The application is all coded in Flex and embedded on the flash platform, so it looks pretty smooth and well done.

You can zoom in and out of the globe with the slider on the top left of the page. My only criticism is that it moves pretty quick which means that you have get fast at reading the tweets and enjoy those images while you can. I think that there should be an option to slow down the refresh.

All this is total time wasting stuff but still worth the look. It is a great demonstration of data visualization and yet another way that shows we are not alone on this huge planet but, this makes the world a wee bit smaller.

Twittervision 3D is here
