The Global Geek Podcast #049 :: 09 f9 11 02 9d 74 e3 5b d8 41 56 c5 63 56 88 c0

We don’t think that the curse of the mummy got us this week… so far and that is a good thing.

We could not ignore the Digg fiasco in the wake of publishing above DVD encryption key. While Digg are holding a shotgun to their own head Pandora are taking drastic measures to save itself and our very own “chasers” get one up on the Wikipedia founder.

We have a great Mac widget this week that enables you to take screen captures easily plus an awesome photo uploader. Find out how to de-clutter your screen and some more 3D goodness for your XP beast.

Tony gives us a great tip for Mac users in sites and services with screen casts for your Mac. We visit another top video converter with options galore and Dave fails miserably at pronunciation. Finally a one stop search engine for all your electronics and as it turns out cars…

  1. Peter Bryant Says:

Good job Dave and Tim but i am still missing KW. Just got 3 things to comment on

Pandora - I live outside of the US and Pandora still plays for me

Joost - Dave I have just sent you a invite to your Gmail account. If someone else would like one just ask me.

Igoogle - I have to agree with Dave because I think it looks shit.

  2. Adam Says:

Your ISP thing sounds a bit like the Tiscali UK thing. They closed the forum due to 10000 posts about problems with un-reliaility :S

  3. Dave Gray Says:

@Peter the link in the show notes is all I get when I try to visit Pandora now… Glad that Last.fm is still working, for how long who knows…

Yeah we are missing the KW as well!

Thanks for the Joost invite I’ll have a look, hopefully this week some time. Thanks.

    YeY someone agreed with me!

Last I heard from Tim he is talking about ditching his ISP and getting a new one. He is shopping around atm - anyone got some good suggestions for Tim?

  4. Tony Says:

    Try internode Timmy

I will comment on show when I am finished..still 20 mins to go.

  5. Dave Gray Says:

@Tony he doesn’t like Internode, that’s who I am with and I suggested it and he said something about not liking the plans or something. Me, I reckon they are great. Meh

  6. Alex Says:

Hi guys… great show again as always.

A guest for show 50? Well it’s got to be Cameron, Mr. Head Honcho of the Podcast Network :-)

    Kind regards to you all.

  7. George Says:

    TGGPers

Enjoyed the podcast the week. Must admit KW’s views of the world are missed. I listened to the clippy prank episode again yesterday and laughed at the end with KW’s rant on mychingo.

Just out of interest could you include some stats on the show in the next podcast i.e. number of listeners/ downloads, locations etc. Its not important but i must admit i would be interested to find out.

    Cheers

  8. Tony Says:

May I suggest you put a 5 last comments widget in the side panel to make it easier to see if people have made posts. Will save a lot of scrolling and my scroll-wheel won’t wear out so fast :P

  9. Dave Gray Says:

@Tony why not subscribe to the RSS feed for comments? The feed is at the bottom of this page:

    feed://http//globalgeek.thepodcastnetwork.com/comments/feed/

That should make it easier! But to cut a long story short - we don’t have access to our template - otherwise great idea! Pester Cam ;)

  10. Tony Says:

Hmm Cam has it on his blog..what a lazy sob…

I shall have words with him, btw did you see my email from last nite, love your input

  11. Dave Gray Says:

Sure did dude, just have to make time to get some stuff done… right now I am finding it an uphill battle!

But I am thinking about your idea and I will comment when I can.

  12. Jeffro Says:

Good show as always. Still impressed me by just how much content you guys manage to fit into a one hour show.

About the IGoogle name, I too thought it was stupid and Tim took the words right out of my mouth concerning Apple and their possible lawsuit over the little letter i. Here is what I wrote on my blog considering the name

“I could of came up with a better name than iGoogle, for instance GooglePlex or how about MyGoogle. It just seems like all of these fortune 500 companies marketing departments have become increasingly lazy and if you want to make a buck just throw the i in front of your product name and it will sell!”

Also, I use the normal Flickr Uploadr to upload my photos in a batch and I find that the uploadr provides all of the tools and features I need. I don’t know why the FLickR gateway would be needed.

  13. Dave Gray Says:

    @Jeff Thanks for the comments.

The PictureSync app is a killer app because of the fact that it does multiple sites and it does it well. That is a great move if you have heaps of sites that you use for your pics. Plus I think that this is only the start - you’ll see a lot more come out of it in the future. Me, I too use the Flickr uploader and it works a treat, especially the fact that it supports multiple accounts.

PS: Don’t worry I have not forgotten about your private IM!! Really busy!!! Don’t worry I am going to let you guys in on what the go is as soon as I can… but I think my head is exploding in the mean time. BUT still doing the show for this week! I am editing it right now as a matter of fact… speaking of which - BACK TO IT!

  14. Jeffro Says:

LOL I wouldn’t mind hearing a segment of just Dave cussing and ranting at everything in the world. The ratings would go through the roof!

  15. Dave Gray Says:

What did I say that was so funny? ;)

I did not think that I ranted that much, then again maybe I do… I do know that if I feel passionately about something then sure you will hear from me, and you won’t miss it!

Actually we have a hole in the schedule, if anyone can think of a short segment that you would like then let us know.

  18. Jeffro Says:

Short segment idea: Give us all of your news sources. Actually an RSS segment dealing with readers, and where to easily get the best RSS feeds to through into the reader would be cool.

  19. Global Geek Says:

He he he… nice try Jeff! As I have said before there is no way on this planet that I am going to give away all my news sources… BUT

I like your idea about sourcing and building your own OPML file of RSS goodness. News Readers, yeah I like that idea as well, it has been done before as far as reviews go. But sure we can take a look at a few.
