  1. Ajay Says:

    Hello, Global Geek Podcast!

Ajay hear from Sunny San Francisco !

    Been a listener since ep.5
Love the show and the you guys do a great job.
I converted some of my mates to listen to this great podcast aswell.

I have one small iceech bout’ the show however that seems that bug me, that Tim & Dave are excluding Knightwise, when you guys talk i find you hardly give him a chance for his output.

I love listening to him because of his humor and take on things on the tech world.
Maybe if you could include him more. love to hear a response.

    Ajay.
P.S: I think the show went a little of when Tim came. Me and my friends have liked it when two guys discuss matters like e.g(Diggnation.

  2. Global Geek Says:

    Hey Ajay

Great to hear that you have been a long time listener and that you have passed the word around, keep doing that…

One small thing that you might not know is that I think you must be referring to the Rebuild Special. Knightwise actually said to us that he was not going to say much during that episode.

Plus, he actually records the show. The software gives the person who is recording the show dominance. So whatever he says overrides all other incoming audio.

Point taken however. Take a listen to this weeks show and let Tim and I know how we went together. I gotta tell ya Tim can talk that’s why he is a bugger to edit :) But nice constructive criticism thanks.

Knightwise adds some killer content and is naturally funny, his absence would be sorely missed. I know he would appreciate your comments.

  3. Peter Bryant Says:

Another grate show geeks but I did miss KnightWise slagging off Microsoft.

@Tim 1.5MB Internet. You need to get faster Internet for a geek that is just to slow.

120GB Ipod if it plays the Xvid video format it would still be too small for me I have a lot of shit.

Mozy Online Back-up is not 2GB for $60 2GB is free for $60 you get 50GB

P.S. if you need a good virus scanner I recommend Nod32 it is vary simple and vary fast

  4. George Says:

Good job Dave and Tim, but i agree that KW was missed, not for any other reason apart from his differing views on things, which is what makes everything interesting.

@ Tim you cracked a joke during the podcast that I laughed at and thought I had better comment on it but for the life of me I cant remember.

Anyways keep up the good work.

  5. Dave Gray Says:

@Peter Thanks for the comment. Yeah we missed KW as well, but we are glad that you thought the show was great.

I am not sure where you are from but here in Australia fast connection speeds are pretty expensive. 1.5 MB through the main provider is about 100 bucks a month. The better priced ISP’s (that are reliable) are anywhere from 60-70 bucks a month. They have just offered 1.5 - 8 MB variable speed here and that’s about 70-80 bucks a month. ADSL 2 is not freely available (I don’t have access to it here). So here in Australia most Aussies don’t have fast speeds at all. In fact most people have about 512/128 (average). It is the geeks that have 1.5MB connections. Some that are lucky can access ADSL 2.

So I guess I agree our connections are too slow for geeks, but unless we get some awesome ISP sponsor that wants to give us ball tearing speeds… we have to buy food - it is a bitch but the kids would get upset otherwise…

One thing I would ask, would you listen to and view everything on your iPod given a 120 GIG HD? Maybe that’s a topic for the show. Are iPod’s a repository or storage for all your data or just that which you are listening to or using on a regular basis? Remember that a 100 GIG HD is about 13 weeks (can’t remember exactly) worth of continuous listening.

Yeah stuffed up the Mozy story, we don’t get everything right all the time. Considering the volume of stuff that we cover I think our error rate is pretty good. But thanks for the correction.

Keep the comments rolling in guys, remember to be nice and constructive in what you say. Us host right at present are pretty stressed in our real life situations (nothing to do with the show). We will let everyone know what’s going on as the weeks go by. But we are churning out a show as best we can and as good as we can every week.

  6. Eric Says:

    Sponsors!

Nokia, Apple, Fujitsu, and the people that make Sambal Oelek.. mmmm

Regarding RC2 expiring. The longhorn beta went public last week. I downloaded it for my wife’s POS dell 9100.

Regarding Amiga. OSnews.com had a few Amiga stories today.

    I missed knitewise this week.

  7. Tony Says:

Was it just me or are the Tablet PC guys gonna pissed at you for not playing their ad when you said you were going to it?

Yea KW was missed, I think he missed it on purpose just so he could get all the sympathy comments on the blog :P

I have an 80GB iPod at it has about 13GB free atm. I know I still have CD’s that are in storage somewhere that I haven’t yet ripped so that would be more space taken up on it along with all the podcasts I have on it as well. I could prob get close to filling a 120GB iPod but wouldn’t rush out to buy one. I would rather watch video on a PSP to be honest, it a much better form factor for video and looks way better than a tiny iPod screen. Not sure I could watch a whole movie on an iPod.

Not sure if it as important re the DRM story but you didn’t mention that the non-DRM songs would be at a higher cost and also a higher bitrate than the current DRM songs. I think it was gonna be an extra $0.50USD per song and bitrate was going from 128kbs ro 256kbs.

I have an 8Mbps internet plan after upgrading from 1.5Mbps. I went over my download limit last week so last 6 days my speed had been shaped and was so slow. It is expensive but until I can get ADSL2 from my local echange it will have to do. I am still very happy with it. I am sure if Tim looks around he could get an 8Mbps plan close to his 1.5Mbps plan and he could maybe ditch the ISP that starts with T and endsin PG.

I think that is all for now, if I think of anything else I shall let you know.

  8. Global Geek Says:

Oh dear… that was me sorry Tablet PC guys - I’ll make it up to you next week!

At that point in time of the edit I was doing about 50 things at once and I was being IM’ed by a butt load of people… I usually have it in DND or off. I will have to remember to do that…

Believe it or not but this is the first time I have made a mistake like this in the entire show history!

  9. Peter Bryant Says:

@Dave I am in the UK and I pay £22 a mouth to get unlimited 8MB
would I listen to and view everything on my iPod?
well no not with the screen size of the current ipod but like Tony said i do watch a lot of video on my psp.

  10. Dave Gray Says:

@Peter - damn that is cheap! About half of what we pay!

Plus: so if you would not watch everything on your iPod why do we need larger storage capacities? Just a thought that’s all.

  11. Dave Gray Says:

@Eric when we asked for suggestions for sponsors we thought people might come up with some attainable ones! But meh you suggested it - screw it I am going to approach them… I’ll let you know what they say - if anything!

@Tony all true regarding the DRM thing - although our pourpose wasn’t to cover the whole thing, just the invite by Jobsy. We thought everyone would know about the price hike. But thanks for the reminder. I’d pay more for DRM free music at any rate. Regarding the ISP’s in Australia - we pay too much period, thank Telstra’s monopolistic strangle hold for that one.

  12. Nick Bradbury Says:

Thanks for the kind words about FeedDemon!

  13. Global Geek Says:

@Nick thanks heaps for listening… or have you just seen the show notes… he he. Either way thank you very much Nick, we love your software, mainly because it kicks butt.

We are very much looking forward to the next version. Just hope that syncing of shared feeds issue can get sorted.

    Love your work Nick.

  14. Nathan Blyth Says:

Hey guys when i download the show i only get about the first 15 minutes then it cuts off. HELP!!!!! I can’t get my weekly dose of the geek!!! Cheers, Nathan.

  15. Global Geek Says:

@Nathan DUDE that is a disaster. Unfortunately, I am sorry but I have downloaded the podcast via the various methods available:

    - iTunes
    - Streaming from this page
    - Right Clicking and “Save As” –> Download here on this page

But I cannot duplicate your problem :( That means that it is probably something at your end… What are you using to get the show, iTunes or direct download what??

Perhaps try another method and see what happens… let me know! Anyone else had the same problem???

  16. George Says:

    Guys

I occasionally have a problem with itunes not updating the podcast but the I just re-subscribe.

Nathan it may be that you are downloading too much at once, i know firefox occasionally will cut d/l’s short if you have more than 2-3 @>2mb going. Or maybe thats just my PC.

  17. Dave Gray Says:

So George you reckon that is an iTunes issue? It is a bit strange though.

I have found that iTunes has been a bit flaky here in Aus lately. Today it dropped out and refused to connect to the internet at all. Maybe this happen in the middle of a download?

  18. George Says:

    Dave

I doubt that it is itunes. One way to find out, just reinstal it. My problem with itunes is that often for a number of podcasts itunes does not see new updates. However, if i delete the podcast and resubscribe everything is good again for a month or so. I find it always happens the night before I have to travel and need my podcasts to keep me entertained.

Nathan will have to tell us if he has found a work around.

This is the 18th post for this week, you look like exceeding last weeks total of 19!

  19. Nathan Blyth Says:

It was a direct download. Thanks George, that was probably the problem, I was downloading quite a few podcasts at once. Its all sorted now. Thanks for your help. Cheers, Nathan.

  20. Tim Says:

Glad you sorted out your problem Nathan, what platform are you on? (Win/Mac)

Why I ask is because there are a few fairly well known known issues with simultaneous transfers in Win XP (SP2 especially) that can be fixed really easily!

Its all to do with the TCP/IP.sys that is packaged with Win XP.

So if anyone would like to know how to supercharge their XP box (especially if you have 1.5mb broadband or above) just ask!

  21. George Says:

Tim as im about to upgrade in rural Qld from 512 down to 1.5 down please elaborate!

  22. Nathan Blyth Says:

Yeah Tim, Im on xp and have a 1.5mb connection, please do elaborate.

  23. Nathan Blyth Says:

BTW guys another great show. I thought Tim & Dave did a great job in the absence of KW. Missed KW and Dr Evil though, but all in all still a great show. Great to have you on the podcast as a co host too Tim, you add yet another dimension to an already awesome podcast. Cheers, Nathan.

  24. Dave Gray Says:

@Tim maybe if you have time wack a blog post together as a “How To”. Or perhaps there is plenty on the net and we just need to point people in the right direction?

@Nathan thanks dude, kind words. Thanks also to the guys that chimed in and tried to give Nathan a hand.

Perhaps Nathan you should give something like iTunes a go for downloading and managing your podcasts and music. It really is easy to use. The other thing is that these apps tend to manage downloads better than a direct download from a page.

Hey George how rural are you? Are we talking cows and grass or desert and sheep?

  26. Tim Says:

I’ll do a little segment on how to do it for the next podcast, that’ll probably be best…

  27. George Says:

    Dave

Technically not really in “rural” Qld but it feels like it. I live on the outskirts of Toowoomba, work for a Brisbane company, and as previoulsy posted, travel around a fair bit, and no I dont sell stuff. In terms of rural we have a family property about 1 hour from here, so no cows here but we do have some there, and yes, you could say Toowoomba is a bit like a desert.

To put things into context in the area where we currently live, ADSL only became available about 12-18 months ago as far as I can work out, yet other areas within Toowoomba it has been available for 3+ years. I would like to go to ADSL2 however from what my searches tell me on whirlpool I cant get it here even though we are not that far from the centre of Toowoomba.

My current ISP starts with and O and ends with ptus. They recently sent a letter stating our internet and phone are both about to rise in price, what I consider significantly. Thus its a good time to go to 1.5.

  28. Michael Specht Says:

Guys, left you a voice mail on the G’Day World feedback line, not sure if it will work as I was in the car listening, but make sure Cam at least gives it to you :P

A few pieces of feedback, yeah bring back KW as much as he can bitch and complain he adds a nice touch. Also you keep pushing the envelope on length 1hr 13 min is getting out there. Any chance of cutting back to about 55 min plus the music? Finally instead of another Twitter case, setup 3 ustream.tv accounts, embed all 3 on a single page, get yourselves and IRC room and broadcast live while still recording. The ultimate geek Pirillo has been doing it. Another thought on sponsors, look at Acer, Dell, Xoxide, ATX cases?

  29. Dave Gray Says:

@Michael Yes Cam sent us the feedback. That explains why you didn’t use the MyChingo Button. Just as a side note I don’t mind if anyone wants to send feedback to my Skype Account - I have voicemail. No SkypeIn number with that so not much good in the car ;)

Now the show length thing. A while back we asked listeners about length and content. We did not get much feedback. But the feedback that we did get was to let it ride, don’t worry too much. Having said that I agree with you Michael, we do try to keep it to an hour… fail mostly but we aim in that direction. We have taken your comment on board and thanks we will cut more content to get the time down (as much as it pains us!).

Thanks mate and thank you for being a loyal listener. We are always looking for innovative ways to change and become better. We are constantly a work in progress. Thanks for the suggestions on sponsors. One you suggested is on the list already :)

  30. Nathan Blyth Says:

Don’t cut back the show guys, the longer the better. It could go for 3 hours if you want!

  31. Dave Gray Says:

See what I mean - Okay guys where is the sweet spot???? What is the magic length that keeps the 1 hour people happy and the longer people happy?

Chime in ppl!!!! inquiring minds NEED to know…

  32. Rooster’s Rail Recording Skype :: MX Skype Recorder « Says:

[...] Here is the show that I recorded with MX Skype Recorder. I am sure the next effort will be better still as we had a few settings that we could have better tweaked. [...]

  33. Michael Specht Says:

The issue I have on length is not just the time to listen on top of all the other podcasts but one that I listen to the show over 4 or 5 days and sometimes iTunes just craps out and “forgets” where I was. Worse case is iTunes thinks I have finished listening and then the show drops out of my playlist and then I have no idea which show it was etc and don’t/can’t easily go searching so I miss it.

Maybe I need a better way of managing my podcasts, topic idea?, so I don’t miss things. :-)

My setup, I have anywhere for 30 - 50 unlistened episodes of podcasts waiting, right now according to iTunes about 1.9 days worth. I have a recently added playlist which has 40 items added in the last 12 weeks that have a play count of 0, this is where I live mostly, however when we puchase music it gets screwed up, so I have a backup playlist “Not Listened to Podcasts”, again 40 items, Genre “Podcast”, play count of 0.

  34. Tim Says:

Yeah, we are working on getting the show times worked out a little better thats for sure.

What platform are you using? Win/Mac? Because it sounds like your copy of iTunes is a little FUXXOR3D.

Other ways you could get your podcasts would be with something like Juice and Yamipod (both cross platform), unfortunately there is no really good solution that gives you iTunes like capabilities with Podcast management.

Don’t worry though, I can’t even get to the freakin’ iTunes music store from iTunes!

    CURSE YOU TPG!!! *shakes fist*

  35. George Says:

    Guys

My drive to the office takes 2 hours twice a week. 2 hours of TGGP sounds good to me.

  36. Tony Says:

Hmmm make it as long as you like..2.5 hrs each way plus time at work means i have lots of listening time.

Mike hide you earbuds in one ear and listen at work, or get a bluetooth headset and pretend your waiting for work related calls :P

  37. Michael Specht Says:

Tony, nice idea, problem would be the lack of work getting done :-)

  38. Dave Gray Says:

Well I can safely say that it won’t be 2 hours - sorry… Michael, I am with Tim - it does sound like your copy of iTunes is up the shit.

But one thing I have done since I rebuilt my PC was I have cut down on the number of podcasts that I subscribe to. I was clearly not getting through the number of podcasts I wanted to so I had to get a bit ruthless. I put the ones in that were “must” listen to and pretty much ditched the rest. Now I am not suggesting that you ditch us :) but maybe looking at it and saying “well… I really *want* to listen to all of them - but which ones do I REALLY want to listen to?”.

Another trick I have done is have a few podcasts listed in my “podcasts” that I am not subscribed to - these are the ones where if I get through my must listen to list, I can go and get an episode and listen to it. But because I have not subscribed I don’t feel the pressure to have to listen to it.

I just hope that we make the short list :)

  39. Michael Specht Says:

@Dave, not going to drop anymore podcasts as I *need* them all :-), to make matter worse or better that Rich Giles’s new company keeps sending me more good stuff!

Interesting point about iTunes being up the shit, never thought of that, but my guess might be the iPod is up the shit as that seems to be the issue. Might be time for an iPod rebuild! Forget that I just want an iPod with Wifi so I can sync my Ipod without taking it out of the car!
