The Global Geek Podcast #043 :: Show Us Your twits

This week we crack on with the show on our own again. But that makes it no less worthwhile! Knightwise’s Intro pretty much sums it up…

“With your feedback, a lot of friendly banter, Dr evil making a house call and of course some DRM free music, this is the ultimate, heavily cafinated, completely irresistible, non-prunesafe, power-hungry, resource friendly, information stuffed Teddy bear that we call: The Global Geek Podcast Number 43… “

Don’t ask me, remember he is Belgian! That said it is worth listening to to hear him say that really fast… But yes we have a packed show as always these are the Show Notes.

  1. Michael Specht Says:

ohh Knightwise you really should try Twitter. I challenge you register, set up your phone get yourself 10 friends that you actually know and use it for 2 weeks and see how you go. :-) If you still think it is a waste of time watch do call Twittervision (http://twittermap.com/twittervision)?

  2. Peter Bryant Says:

knightwise i think the song Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan did as a duet was ‘Especially for You’

  3. knightwise Says:

Thanx Peter ! , Believe it or not , when I turned on MTV late last night .. they where playing the videoclip ! Wicked ! My god , its gonna take forever to get the tune out of my head.

  4. Global Geek Says:

@Michael Notice he said nothing in that comment above about twitter?

Be prepared for an insult btw…

  5. Peter Bryant Says:

I just gave twitter a try and i was not impressed all you do is just write a couple of lines of text and that is it what is the point!

  6. Global Geek Says:

Well Peter, I am not sure what the point is. But it does get interesting when you add some friends. Plus you can add users, they do not have to approve you. You then see what they are saying. But the good thing is that they may be say, Dave Weiner, Steve Rubel etc. It is cool to see what they are doing and saying.

I guess when you have added a few friends it does get more interesting. I’ll search for you and add you :). I am sure that Michael will do the same.

  7. Peter Bryant Says:

Ok i will add some more friends and see if i like it thx

  8. knightwise Says:

No provoking of the paladin here Dave :) I’ll answer Micheals remark about TWIT when I have the time. ;)
( and yes , insults will fly back and forth as usual )

  9. Michael Specht Says:

wouldn’t want you to get all stressed over having to do too many things now would we Knightwise. BTW I know that Peter is watching the news TV at the moment, thanks to Twitter!

Peter make sure you have your phone set up as well then you will feel more connected.

  10. knightwise Says:

Ok Ok ! I’ve GOT a twitter acount , stop twisting my arm !!! (www.twitter.com/users/knightwise) I hate to bore you people to death with my seamingly exiting lifestyle, but i don’t have a lot to tell. The whole cellphone twitter thing is beyond me cause its a UK number they give me. So in order to update from my cell i would need to send an international text message. If anyone has a way to twit via email (so i can do it from my treo) or via a palm os application (so i could do it from my treo) I would probalbly have more time to waste my time on twitter .
( Ps : Now that i’m trying it, don’t expect me to go all lovie-dovie on it ! )

  11. Dave Gray Says:

The phone thing is a bit overrated imho and the cost of the SMS is prohibitive. But there are a number of programs that might help you out KW and make it just as fun.

There is of course the Firefox extension that I blogged about last week. Ignore the name - it is a button at most. AND it has been updated and is much better than on release!:
    http://spatialviews.com/twitterbar

Since you use a Mac there is an app called twitterific:
    http://iconfactory.com/software/twitterrific

There is also a widget that Tim told me about and then there is the Web on your homepage!

Happy twittering Knightwise! LOL LOL LOL

Remember - be subjective mate! BTW whats the username?

  12. Tony Says:

Ok I also have a twitter account. I am Kodo

feel free to add me see what boring crap i am doing when I am at home, usually playing WoW

  13. Peter Bryant Says:

Hi Michael Specht I have now set up my phone so whenever one of my friends makes a post it gets text to me. But I don’t think I will post by SMS as i am just on a pay as you go phone

  14. Tony Says:

Dave his username is in his post…what would you expect it to be…knightwise

  15. Dave Gray Says:

Yeah I guessed that… I did a search for it and found him. You could not miss it:

    “trying out this twittershit”

    Must be him!

  16. Tony Says:

Ok not a good chat for twitter I guess. My point was the 8 core Macpros aren’t going to be tragetted at “the average user”. The current macpro isn’t either. For the normal user a Mac mini or iMac is totally fine.

I was listening to TWIM (This week In Media) yesterday and they were drooling over a possibility of 8 core macpro. Reason being is they work in film production and new machine will cut production time a lot and is also comparable to machines worth $20K the studios are using. This is for the high-end user and therefore the price will be what it is and it will be bought by professionals, not normal people like me and you.

  17. Tony Says:

OMG Twittervision is beyond cool and addictive.. Wonder if I can use that at work, fill in at lunch time.

  18. Dave Gray Says:

OK yup I agree with you. That is in fact what I said in the show. But yes we did not really state that they are really aimed at the high end user. So you are right in that regard.

Since I know bugger all about Macs. Will these 8 core jobs do more than a very high end PC? My point being, could consumers turn to PC because of the bang for buck factor. Or are we talking pure Mac fanboys here that won’t do that under any circumstances?

  19. Tony Says:

I think your gonna find more people go to macs than go the other way. When it comes to stuff like film editing I think find majority use Macs over PC no matter how high-end the PC is.

  20. Dave Gray Says:

@Tony - you get that to work for you too? Cool eh… I have not seen any twits for you yet. It took me a bit of digging to get the instructions. But here they are for everyone else (the basic version)

    1. No registration so don’t look for it
    2. in a twitter post update your location by entering:
L:[town or address or country or whatever here]
3: It takes the feed from the twitter mainpage. Stick around it takes a bit to see yours.

    Check out twittervision here:
    http://twittermap.com/twittervision

    Detailed instructions here:
    http://twittermap.com/maps/faq.html

  21. knightwise Says:

Ok you twitter maniacs, How bout helping me out in getting to appreciate this twittercrap. (i’m sorry , that was subjective) If there is anyone out there that knows (or has) a cool free client for my treo so i can twit from there (using my gprs connection) If not , does anyone know a good ICQ client for the palm os , then i can autorize my old ICQ number to use that to twit on the road. Then i’ll give you some interesting posts to read. (btw , thank you all for adding me as a friend , i cant wait to bore you to tears with the useless things i do all day).

  22. Tony Says:

Godamn it’s so hard to stop watching twittervision. I think i will just stick with RSS feed. Hopefully twitter isn’t blocked at work, i need to release some stress sometimes, usually after getting off the phone with another idiot.

  23. Tony Says:

Knightwise according to a google search for treo and twitter and Treo IM client will work. Also try a google search for Treo IM

  24. Global Geek Says:

@Knightwise: twitter supports MSN, ICQ, Gtalk and Jabber. An initial search found that there is a Jabber client for Palm OS called Chatopus:
    http://www.chatopus.com/

That particular client supports interoperability with MSN, Yahoo!, AIM, ICQ, GaduGadu and Sametime as well as GTalk and Gizmo. That might be a better option to a network specific client. FREE - I think.

You do need a Jabber account but they are easy to get (been ages since I have set up Jabber so you are on your own. You might be able to set up your own Jabber server on the LINUX box!)

  25. Global Geek Says:

shit we need a forum this week!

  26. Tony Says:

I believe Adium and gtalk support Jabber. Maybe iChat too but I don’t use that

  27. Peter Bryant Says:

Global Geek if you would like to set up a forum at some point i can help you do that or even set up a forum for you

  28. TPN :: The Global Geek Podcast » Blog Archive » The GGP Widget is Updated and twitter News Says:

[...] « The Global Geek Podcast #043 :: Show Us Your twits [...]

  29. Global Geek Says:

@Peter thanks for the offer. There are actually forums for TPN. We don’t have a forum there at this time. We can if I ask.

OK guys: do you want a forum on the TPN forums for the Geek? There has to be a fair few of you to warrant it though so sound off if that is the case.

  30. knightwise Says:

Damn , if anyone has a link to a good jm2e (java) version of ICQ or Googletalk you can always post it here. That way i’ll be able to surf to it with my treo, install it and have it up and running even before I get home. And then I can twit to your harts desire.

  31. MeIr Says:

I think Crittersim alike was also on Windows ages ago, I don’t remember the name of th game :(

  32. Global Geek Says:

Are you thinking of a game called “Creatures”

  33. knightwise Says:

I once wore the same pare of socks for three months. When i looked inside .. It was running its own version of Crittersim .. Talk about cross platform.

  34. Michael Specht Says:

Dave, if you want a TPN forum I can set one up.

Knightwise, as Peter says you can set up your phone to receive, SMS costs can get very espensive and being over 25 my thumbs just don’t type very fast!! IM is good when it works the Twitter infastructure is just not coping with the growth.

Oh and Twittervision is like crack, in fact worse than crack as it costs you nothing!!

  35. Peter Bryant Says:

Michael as i live in the UK it is free for me to receive text messages from twitter but maybe I should stop them, I just turned my phone on and I got 19 messages from twitter.

  36. knightwise Says:

anyone know a free portable twitterclient on a usb stick ? then i’ll be able to run it from my pc at work.

  37. Dave Gray Says:

Knightwise stay tuned… I was saving this post but I’ll put it up tonight!

  38. TPN :: The Global Geek Podcast » Blog Archive » Windows twitter Client :: Twitteroo Says:

  39. knightwise Says:

Too bad I have W2k at work , dont workie :( . No prob , will install im client on Treo as soon as I have my macbook back.

  40. rich Says:

“ministryofsound.com”??!! are you an old raver Knightwise?

  41. knightwise Says:

heheh :) I discovered ministryofsound a few years back, and loved their streaming radio ever since. They turned me on to artists like Paul van Dijk and Tiesto before the average teenager even knew who they where. I’m by far a raver but have a variety of tastes in music.
and who are you calling old !

  42. rich Says:

of course, I meant not “old”!! apologies :)
by the way PortableApps includes Adium i think, if you are still after a twitter client for a usb drive - although I may be behind the times!

  43. knightwise Says:

yep , but isnt adium 4 the mac ? (the portable app is so i can twit from work on w2k) but no prob , i’ll shove it on my treo and give it a buzz from there.

about the “old” thing. Do 20 push ups right now and you are forgiven.

    The paladin !

  44. rich Says:

apologies - poetable apps comes with gaim and miranda - both run on win2k - you could even run Mac OS 7 off your usb if you wanted - bizarre!
did the push ups standing up - is that o.k? :)

  45. rich Says:

    ??poetable?? I am so literate!!

aerial push ups are legit !

  48. Dave Gray Says:

    No they are not

  49. rich Says:

you obviously havn’t seen my aerial push-ups mate!

  53. scientaestubique Says:

Don’t joke about boycotting Microsoft, you could end up getting sued: http://scientaestubique.wordpress.com/2007/02/25/will-australians-lose-their-legal-right-to-boycott-business/

  54. Jeffro Says:

Wow, I needed to find a translator for text but I didn’t know which language it was in and then I remembered that Polyglot application and it worked like a charm. It figured out the text was Indonesian and after I translated it the post I was inquiring about was spam. Thanks for the program mention.

  55. JJ Says:

If you are looking for a Treo / Palm OS application to post to Twitter, you can take a look to our new freeware, TreoTwit:

  56. Jeffro Says:

By the way Knitewise, you may want to read this http://leoville.vox.com/library/post/goodbye-twitter-hello-jaiku.html as once again Leo states there is no direct affiliation between TWiT and Twitter.
