Firefox Extension :: twitterbar
From the extension name I thought this Firefox extension was another toolbar for Firefox, if that is the case then I would not even blog about it. But this extension allows you to make posts to twitter directly from the address bar in firefox, with a couple of nice touches.
Twitter is all the rage at the moment and with it comes mass adoption and development of applications and tools. Since twitter have released the API application development is fairly brisk. For a quickly knocked up extension this is a pretty cool addition to your twitter arsenal.
To post all you have to do is type directly in the Firefox address bar followed by “–post” [that is hyphen hyphen post]. That’s it all done, the entry is posted to your twitter page. You have 140 characters to play with. I would screenshot the extension in action, but it is so small and unobtrusive that there is no point. But it does not look the best in some themes, but not so much that you would not use it. The instructions need to be better but you’ll work it out.
One feature that is useful is clicking the “+” symbol (which is all you see from the extension) it will post the web page that you are currently looking at with “Currently Browsing: [URL here]. You can now edit this text in the settings. Nice.
The extension has been updated today to include some security features in addition to automatically opening up twitter in a new tab on post.
This is a good extension for those that love twitter. I am playing around with the service so feel free to add me as your friend.

One word of caution Dave, to make sure you don’t twitter your searches, reset the search box back to your fav search engine after using it.
When are we going to see Knightwise on Twitter or is it still too much of a waste of time for him

that would be the latter for Knightwise.
We are talking about twitter this week and I am sure he will give his opinion.
Great tip though thanks. How do you use twitter and what do you use to send twits? Did you try the extension?

thanks for commenting on my extension, and i’ll look into creating some better instructions.

@michael: this is not the search plugin - the very thing you are talking about led me to create this extension out of frustration.

Thanks for checking out the GGP blog Tony.
Yeah I thought the whole twitter your search was weird. I thought what Michael was saying was that when twittering a URL for a search page.
I reckon that you have done a great job. What do you think about making it a button that is detached from the addressbar? It really screws with my theme.

I could add a toolbarbutton which you could drag in next to your home button etc like a lot of extensions roll out with (can’t really think of anywhere else to put it?)
Are you able to mail me a screenshot so I can see what is going on?

sure no problem, talk to you via email.
But I think the idea you have is a good one, allowing the user the option to customize where it goes is always a good idea.

Well I had better get go and check it out then

Yeah Michael, Tony has updated the extension since this post. He added in all the things that I suggested and there are better instructions. Definitely a lot better now. I really like it with the improvements.

[...] One of the drawbacks of twitter is that if you are not using your phone and going mobile with it you are somewhat chained to the twitter web page to update. I covered a new Firefox Extension last week called twitterbar. It is an excellent extension that allows you to post directly from the Firefox Address bar. I use it and like it. But say you don’t want another extension or you don’t want to be chained to a webpage? Enter Twitteroo. [...]
