Blue Dot: A Better Alternative to del.icio.us
As we have said on the show, we use Blue Dot extensively to prepare the links that we use and share for the show. We have encouraged our listeners to use del.icio.us to tag websites as suggestions for the show or maybe just to draw something to our attention. Everyone has really taken to this and we get heaps of interesting links that we both use and view. We really appreciate it! But how about giving Blue Dot a go?
We think del.icio.us is alright, don’t get us wrong. But we think that Blue Dot is better. Blue dot is similar, you save and tag websites that you want to keep or to share. There are other things that are going for it though. You can tag a site, write a description AND save an image to associate it with. This makes it a lot easier and more logical when you are looking for a link later.
The one very cool feature that makes it indispensable for the show is the function that allows you to share links with specific people or groups. For the show links we have set up a “podcast group”. You might have a group of friends or relatives that you want to do the same with. These links are not made public at all and only shared with your elected group. Or you can keep links totally private and only viewable by you. Nice touch.
Also check out the Firefox Extension for Blue Dot that enables a very usable window to input your site, description, tags and who to share it with. Set up your account before you install it. Very easy to use and being a Firefox Extension makes it very easy to install and if you want to - uninstall.
Here is what I think will be great if you guys start using Blue Dot more. We can actually comment on your submitted links! There have been heaps of times when I have wanted to comment on one of your links that you have submitted with the “tggp” tag. If you were using Blue Dot Knightwise and myself could have. Plus we think it would be fun.
Recently I discovered that Blue Dot now allows users to subscribe to a tag, just like you can with del.icio.us! So I can keep up to date with the “dots” with RSS! Woot.
So what would be really great is if you guys could give Blue Dot a go, I don’t think that you would be disappointed at all. I will set up a subscription to the tag “tggp” in Blue Dot and I eagerly await incoming links from you all. If you really love Blue Dot then there is an option to import your del.icio.us links to the service. Don’t worry I will still keep tabs on the del.icio.us links, but we will be promoting Blue Dot on the show.
Blue Dot is totally awesome and it is far superior to del.icio.us in our opinion. There are far more features and tools than I have mentioned here and more added all the time. Have a crack! Remember, it is tggp to tag a link! Oh, and feel free to add us as friends:
