The Oldest Podcaster?
I usually look for stories but this one found me. For those that don’t know I follow every link and check out everyone’s homepage. You might see me make the occasional comment on yours. Today we got a few comments on the blog so I did my usual checking out of homepages. Sonia left us a comment and a link on the “Clippy Prank” post. When I got to her site I had to do a double take:

The picture that greeted me was of an older lady. I thought nahh… this has to be a joke right? I read on (thankfully) and found out that no this is no joke. This lady by the name of Sonia Brock is a legend in our opinion here at The Global Geek Podcast and proof that this new medium of podcasting is for everyone old and young.
Sonia is 70 years old and is a podcaster. Not sure if that makes her the oldest living podcaster but heck I’ll wager that she has a shoe in. Can anyone verify it? I was amazed at the life she has lead and is leading because she shows no signs of having slowed down any.
Born in 1937 in Chatham, Ontario Canada where she lived for 20 years. She also lived on an Indian Reservation and in New York before she moved back to Toronto Ontario, Canada in 1972. Lets put that in perspective: I was born in 1972! The last 13 years of her working career she spent as a self trained webmaster for the Canadian Government.
Sonia humbly admits that she is now retired. However she still works with private clients. Co-Editing the Toronto African Violet Magazine and makes regular appearances as “Blues Mama” on Danny Marks’ Bluz.fm on jazz.fm in Toronto. Also spends time maintaining a popular links site and The Story of My Dolls, a site about cloth art dolls. So much for retirement!
Sonia forgets to mention in her bio that she is also a podcaster! Wow. Her show with 56 episodes is autobiographical and called very appropriately: “A Storied Life”. Having been involved with Toastmasters has given her the confidence and skills that benefit her podcasting and radio appearances. She describes her podcast as:
“…Podcasts are for family, friends and perfect strangers.”
By the way when not podcasting she is an avid Guild Wars Player! Woot.
I hope that Sonia is inspiration to young and old alike. Knightwise we might be old podcasters yet mate! To Sonia I think you are a total legend and demonstration that life is all that you make it to be. We here at The Global Geek Podcast wish you all the best and trust that your knees hold out and all that. Thank you for making a comment on our blog.
Please check out Sonia’s Podcast and have a listen, she is one amazing lady.
Update: Cameron Reilly has quite correctly pointed out that our very own Father Bob Maguire of The Podcast Network’s Father Bob Show is 73 years of age. But then he is a legend as well onya Father Bob, we hope your knees are okay as well!

I’m sure you’ll still be doing the geek well into you’re 70’s Dave…
