Escher in LEGO
M.C. Escher was a famous graphic artist. Most famous for drawing impossible realities and constructions, explorations in infinity and perspective using architecture, tessellations, drawings and woodcuts. These creations can not exist in reality because they defy the laws of physics. I am sure that you would recognise the art if you saw it. Escher was extremely talented and I would argue genius, some of my favourite works are those of M.C. Escher.
Remember when you were a kid (it might not have been that long ago for some) and you played with LEGO. Content we were with building a house or a spaceship that could “fly” with the aid of some of Mum’s stolen elastic from the sewing kit… Well we could have put all that creative energy into reproducing some of Escher’s work with our LEGO!
These two guys worked for weeks to recreate Escher’s “Relativity”. Because these drawings can not exist they use lighting, angles and construction techniques to make it appear that the creation is fluid and real. Very cleaver stuff and a great deal of effort. It sounds like it would frustrate the hell out of me though!
Provided are some of the “secrets” in constructing the piece in LEGO. In addition this is not the only Escher in LEGO they have completed, so there are links to the others. Definitely worth the look and browse around the sites to see Escher become reality.
