You are only locked into iPod for music purchased though iTunes not any other music. if you rip your cd’s they are still available to be placed on other devices. The way you mentioned seemed o imply that once you moved music to iPod it was locked in to that format only which is incorrect.
There is also an unpublised rule that you can actually contact Apple and get them to reset your details and they will allow you to download your tracks again. They usually only allow this once a year though. Having said that you should back up any purchased music and I believe there is an option in preferences to backup purchased music, or at least there is in Mac version of iTunes.

You are 100% correct. If we were not clear then we stand corrected. We were also making reference to the fact that a suit has been filed against Apple in regards to the DRM associated with iTunes purchased music. From me looking into what I would purchase the iTunes and iPod combination looked “locked in” so it was partly emotive. But I actually love the iPod and iTunes now that I am using it.
I am aware there is a back up feature, which there is in the Windows version too. However, I was unaware that you could contact Apple to download your music again. That is cool, and something that should be offered given the restraints of the DRM.
As Knightwise said in the podcast this is no worse than the DRM associated with the Zune. Which if anything is worse, as far as restrictions go.
Thanks for the comment, we appreciate your input. I am new to iPod and iTunes so I appreciate the information. I don’t think Knightwise knew about the re-download thing either, come to think of it. Thanks!

Dave,
here is a link you maybe interested in. It is titld 8 things about iTunes you may not know. It includes the one about contacting Apple to re-download your songs.

Yea DRM is annoying but I think for me I don’t notice it so much as I only really use my Mac or iPod for music and don’t share it so it’’s not an issue. Zune made a HUGE mistake in my opinion by placing DRM on music with no DRM if you “squirt” it to someone else. That is just wrong beyond belief. Most of music thogh is from cd’s I have ripped from cd’s I have bought over the last 20 years. I do have a few albums I have got from iTuns but wouldn’t make up 2% of stuff on my iPod.
My other comment is about Tag2find, and have to say I am baffled by the point of this program. Any competent computer user, even Windows, I would have thought would have setup some kind of download folder on their system where every download goes too so it is easy to find files that Tag2find is reportedly useful for. If it is to be used for tagging files after they are downloaded and moved elsewhere then I guess that could be useful but I still findd this a strange application.
Oh one more comment about tabs. I do use Safari by choice but there are times when I do have a lot of tabs open. This usually only happens when I go through my newsreader and then click on stories I want to read and it opens a new tab for eack link. I then go to the browser after I have finished all the feeds and catch up that way. Apart from that I see no real reason to have more than a couple of tabs open at any one time.
Only started listening to the show recently when Cam included it in the G’day World feed but enjoying it so far.

I wonder how many other listeners we have picked up from Cam doing that? It has been great! Thanks again Cam.
Tony thanks for the links and info. Plus I have a download folder but it is surprising how many ppl don’t. It also sounds like you are in Knightwise’s camp as far as tabs go. Me I am in the middle, I sometimes have about 10-15 open but mostly about 2-4.
Really glad that you are liking the show. Thanks for your feedback, it really is appreciated and we love hearing from our listeners. More the better!
