Heat Mapping Based on Science

I was doing a bit of recreational RSS reading today. It has been nice being able to relax and just enjoy catching up on feeds for the sake of it. Usually I am looking for resources for the show! But I have found something that I thought was worth sharing. The Feng GUI ViewFinder HeapMap.

I have seen heat maps before based on actual data gathered from visitors to your site. This involves placing some code in your page. This is something very different. This heat map is uses research based upon neuro science and the study of visual attention, perception and cognition. Or as they say “What people are looking at”. Knowing that here is ours for our blog:

So this heat map tells up that the top left of the page gets more attention than the general middle of the page. It shows that the latest shows are in a good spot as well. Stuff like that. I took this screen capture with adblock on so I have no idea about the placement of the adsense. I guess that this would be a great tool to get that right.

This is not an exact science. I would only use this as a tool and a guide. The only thing that is 100% are tools that embed code and give you exact results. Plus it probably involves a load of psycho mumbo jumbo and that is far from an exact science. But it is interesting and it does have some science attached to it! Head over to Feng GUI ViewFinder HeapMap and run your blog through it. Fun if nothing else. By the way it only looks at the top bit so what you see is what you get.
