Service for Linguists or Fans of Words
Self described as "Like Flickr, but without the photos", Wordie is a place to store your own lists of words.
The front page lets you know the most recent words with an RSS feed. Next to each word is a link to various online dictionaries in addition to a Google search and Wikipedia search. Search for a word. Interesting stats are also shown as well along with the most prolific users and new users etc.
I am sorry but I don’t get it. For me words without context are meaningless. I already have a flood of words coming at me that I have to filter out and in depending on what it is about. I was under the impression that this has been done, it is called a dictionary. Or a thesaurus if you were after a new or different word to use.
Dictionaries are boring to read and so are lists without context. Unless you are into semantics which is what discussion about words, their use and correct context is. Semantic arguments are nearly always stupid and have nothing to do with real context and more with perception and implied meaning. This is for those that want to get technical. For me words are vehicles to convey a story or concept, they just need to get me to where I am going. Semantics are quirky and interesting but hardly facilitate the passage of information.
That said, I appreciate the fact that this may well cater to a niche audience. The site is straight forward and simple. The links to dictionaries and searches is a nice touch. If you are into that sort of thing. If you are right into it then add the bookmarklet. They say that it is more fun than it sounds, I’ll take their word for it. A very different type of social networking site.
I think you would expand your vocabulary more by reading some well written blogs and Wikipedia IMHO.
