First America and Now France… the World?

SkypeSkype has announced today that from now until the end of 2006 (at least) France will get SkypeOut calls to land lines free!

“As of right now and until the end of 2006, all SkypeOut calls to landlines within France are free. Unlimited. Zero price. No catches.”

What next? That is what has got me wondering, is Skype single handedly trying to take over the world? Would you; having free calls, use your land line? Hell no! I have no idea how they are making money out of this. Now with two countries getting the free call treatment. Perhaps Skype is being help up by it’s strong ties to eBay. If they offer free calls globally, what then? I think we will see the face of global communication change dramatically. And yet the major Telcos (especially here in Australia) are still sitting on their hands blindfolded pretending that nothing is happening.

Wake Up! You are stilting in the path of a run-away train. The online community that is aware of this technology is getting very clued up, but as yet is a sleeping giant. Already I see in my own circles people waking up to the revolution and becoming a part of it.

As I see it the defense of the Telcos at present will be reactionary and I can see them doing things like blocking VoIP or increasing local call prices from VoIP sources. This is not a solution or good business sense. Evolve you bastards or become extinct! That is when the fun really starts.

One Response to “First America and Now France… the World?”

  1. Jean Mercier Says:

My guess how they are making money …
Skype penetration in France is quite low.
Skype also generates revenue through the selling of Skype Certified products.
So … they try to attract French Users, the costs of SkypeOut incurred by this is probably very low.

Some of these users will buy headphones, dualphones, conferencing tools, etc.
Some others will discover that calling abroad is also quite cheap.

And, my guess, this promotion is untill the end of the year, not one day longer.

The customers they won by this will “perhaps” remain customers.

But i am guessing, i could be wrong!
