Seth’s Web 2.0 Traffic Watch
Generated by Alexa statistics, Seth Godin has had made by Ron Hornbaker, a list of the top 937 Web 2.0 companies based on Alexa Traffic.
While the statistics that are used to generate the list only come from users that have the Alexa toolbar installed Alexa is used as an indicator by many web sites and “watchers”. The toolbar is an Internet Explorer only affair. Interestingly those Firefox users who have the SearchStatus extension installed are also phoning home their browsing behavior to Alexa and the data added to the collected stats. I didn’t know that, I hope the users of the extension do.
While the data that generates this list comes from a narrow source, it does give you an idea about what the buzz is and what is hot and what is not. As long as the data is viewed in this light and given greater credibility than it is due.
The list gives you the rank, what the sites rank was 6 months ago, a link to graph for the in question, the Alexa rank for the site, and finally the rank change from 6 months ago. All relatively useful. This data while not new and available elsewhere, I have not seen it in such a no-fuss and easy to read format.
So take it with a grain of salt but it might be a great place to check out somewhere you have not been before and where the latest hype is centered. It may also be a useful tool for projecting who the survivors are going to be after the Web 2.0 dust clears or the bubble bursts, whatever comes first.
