Gizmo: New Australian Start-up

How is this for an idea: a company that aims to provide tech support for Aussie’s!

Gizmo is an Australian company that provides comprehensive in-home or phone technical support for a wide range of technologies used in the home. As the computer and its related gadgets becomes more and more part of our everyday lives, Gizmo is here to help you get the most out of it.

They are currently offering in house calls for Sydney only, but phone support is available country wide 8 am till 10 pm and 9 am to 6 pm weekends. They claim to let you know how to do what you are doing in plain English. Which is good because in my experience it has to be fairly plain!

The services offered for phone support include:

  • Operating system diagnostic or repair
  • System optimization
  • Network troubleshooting
  • Software installation troubleshooting
  • Security audit
  • Secure your home network
  • General advice

The business model looks good and the prices are pretty reasonable, calls cost $60 Flat Rate. But the cool thing is that if they can fix it in under 10 minutes then it is $20. If you were really stuck with something and had nowhere else to turn I would pay 20 bucks! There is a whole swag of services and costs that you might want to look at. There is also some stuff they don’t do and at this point in time that includes Mac support.

On face value I think this is a needed service at what look to be reasonable prices. It could have legs. As with everything we shall see. I would be interested if they were any good at assisting with more complex problems and if they give you the standard "stupid user" attitude that most tech support centers do.

Not that it is important over service, the web site looks good and clean and easy to navigate.

If anyone uses them let us know here so we can review it on the podcast.
